quote:
Don't you know that you're supposed to do all that dirty stuff, like being gay and getting abortions, in secret? And if discovered, you're supposed to deny everything. Either that or get on national television and beg for forgiveness. That makes everything ok, including pedophilia. Right -- the Don Draper method. All buttoned down on the outside (to fit in and judge others) and wild and crazy at lunch (hotel bedrooms) or in California (hanging with a new age commune), or when visiting with your child's school teacher (in her bedroom.) The conservatism is more about how they want things to be (bright line, moral, clear, wholesome) but they often like and make exemptions for themselves (Dick Cheney's daughter) or Karl Rove getting a no-fault, fast track divorce in TX after bloviating about the sanctity of marriage. Most of the conservatives that I know and respect pull their own weight and expect others to do the same (code of self reliance.) This group is the most centrist and its less wrapped up in family values and fringe issues. Still, not folks who treasure nuance, ambiguity, and or shades of gray. But a group who also are not war mongers and who lean towards pragmatism.
