AnimusRex -> RE: No news is interesting news. (2/26/2010 7:45:30 PM)

In my original post, I neglected to provide conservative reactions- an error on my part.
In response to the story about an elderly woman who was so poor she could not afford her own dentures, and had to wear her dead sister's, the conservatives reacted with their customary Christian compassion (via digby):

The leader of the Republican Party and the leader of the Tea Party disagree about Louise Slaughter's comments at the health care summit yesterday.

Limbaugh:
"If you don't have any teeth, so what? What's applesauce for?"

Beck:
"I've read the Constitution ... I didn't see that you had a right to teeth"

There you see the big split between the two factions. Limbaugh is making the GOP conservative argument that one should be self-sufficient and eat soft food if they can't afford to get your teeth fixed. Beck is making the teabag constitutional argument that if something wasn't specifically written into the constitution then no government official is allowed to even discuss it.

Will they ever be able to find common ground?

The public option will put private insurance companies out of business. There will be no other 'option' except to rely on the federal government..

We have public education funded by the taxpayers and run by the government.
Guess what we still have private schools and people pay pretty steep prices to put their kids there, all the while still paying taxes to support the public government run schools. Why is it that you think the same thing cannot be done with health care?

Yep.  Kicking the Democrats right out of office, and control, in November.  [;)]

Not that the Democrats are competent to govern when they do have control.  Bush II, with what Obama has at his disposal, would have had this thing passed last summer, and it would have looked bipartisan because at least a few Dems would have been terrified of being called "unamerican" if they didn't vote for it.

I think the story that isn't "The Story," is one of basic incompetence to get the job done.

I get tired of this stuff. It's not productive.

Repubs rubber stamped everything. It brought us to this mess.

From there I agree Obama seems a slow learner. He needs to find his inner LBJ--and soon.

You didn't miss much. Rs did a fair job of promoting their slate of reform proposals. Ds held an Olympian Slalom of Sob Stories, each trying to outdo the others, then using said anecdotes as justification for trillions more in spending, death panels, nanny-statism.... i.e. Obamacare. They evidently believe that the plural of "anecdote" is "data", and that empathy alone is a sound basis for policy.

It was actually a perfect representation of the accuracy of my oft-stated belief that conservatism is rooted in analysis, liberalism in emotion.

WTF summit did you watch?

It was actually too funny to watch all at once which is why I haven't commented before now. I've been watching it in segments till I was laughing too hard and had to take a break. Why was I laughing? Because the GOP came armed with their well known talking points and nothing else. They apparently thought repeated chants of 200 pages, start over, take over etc. would be something President Obama would be unprepared for, despite ample previous evidence that he would slice and dice them if they trotted out that stuff. Watching Obama take Cantor apart over his use of the bill as a prop was classic. Later he rendered Senator Barrasso speechless by simply asking him if he would be ok with only a catastrophic care policy and an HSA if he made only 40k a year.

If the GOP ever publicly debate the President again and don't learn to bring more than talking points they should all resign their offices due to either incompetence or insanity.

Neither side had anything new- they've been thrashing this about for almost a year now. Labelling R objections, proposals and issues "talking points" doesn't make them invalid.
D sob stories don't validate their ideas either.

Whine all you want but the President dealt with every one of those talking points or in one of the funnier segments he let Senator Durbin, a former personal injury lawyer who has tried cases on both sides, take apart the medical malpractice reform talking point.

As to you repeated claims about "sob stories" maybe you missed the substantive policy issues dealt with because you had your fingers in your ears shouting "NA NA can't hear you!" at the time.

If the GOP thinks they did well I hope they keep coming back for more right up through November.

Now isn't that surprising...a conservative who has no interest in any opinions other than those that agree with them. So very neocon.

Animus Rex,

I wish that such comments were surprising but unfortunately this kind of mean, petty, condescending attitude seems to parade in public far too often.

If the polls really did show that the public supported a government takeover of our health care system it would be voted for by the dems. That is not the case..

It's interesting. As a package, they're wary of the bill. But point by point, they favor it.

We live in a strange country.

I would say yes and no about the point by point agreement. Asking about general positions, most folks agree with them, it is when they are presented with more detailed planks that they disagree.

I caught a couple hours while it was live, then caught the rebroadcast on CSPAN late night. My personal opinion is that too many of the Dems tried to answer or talk about the topic of the moment using anecdotal evidence to prove x, y, or z. Everything from a woman stealing her dead sisters dentures, to a young boy talking about how his mom died because she lost her job and then her insurance. None of the Dems wanted to touch the topic of why benefits don't kick in for 4 years, and some not for 8, while the taxes kick in right away. Further, I didn't realize until this summit that $500 Billion of the "revenue and savings" is being double counted.

I found it interesting to watch Reid outright lie, when he claimed that nobody was talking about reconciliation then followed it right up with but reconciliation has been used 21 times... and mostly by Repubs. Pelosi and he both mentioned using reconciliation a dozen times over the last couple of months.

There were some really good points made by both sides when they got away from their talking points (note: both sides were guilty of it). All in all, it was exactly what everybody thought it was going to be "a dog and pony show". The point was driven home with the president's closing remarks, and with Pelosi's comments yesterday. There will be no compromises added to the existing bills, and if Pelosi can rangle enough votes to stomach the existing Senate bill they will be attempting to push it through via reconciliation. Possibly using the VP to override the parlimentarian when it is pointed out that it the use goes against the Senate rules.

If the Dems use the VP to override the parlimentarian and attempt to waive the policy part of the rule, it will open the bill up for an unlimited number of ammendments from the minority, which will each require a cloture vote to stop. Virtually this is a Mexican standoff, and nothing is going to get done. Then again the President might surprise everybody when he releases his "plan B" on Wednesday.

Sorry about the wall of text.

Let's be accurate, Dickhead. You twist things whatever way suits your mood at the time, cherry picking facts. That makes two things I get tired of.

The first was the repetitive pattern of claiming no coverage when there's plenty of coverage. You've been busted again.

Let's add a third--the continual straw man creations to pretend you have an argument. My criticism of this administration's handling of affairs, especially health care, is hardly hidden on this forum. But that would mean you have to actually address me and my actual points. Too much trouble for you, so you toss it all aside and attack the invented version.

Let's get serious. You know my problem with conservatives? It's not the ideology. That has a deserved place. It's the bullshit above, over and over and over and over and fucking over.

You want to have a discussion? Discuss.

Nope. You want to change the subject.
