DarkSteven -> A question for the Christians, Jews, and Muslims. (2/26/2010 8:39:42 PM)

I got into a conversation with a Christian woman at my synagogue (she was a visitor) tonight.  She was talking about addicts and recovery of people in the monotheistic religions.  For some reason, I interpreted religion as a form of M/s, in which a believer worships a Master in the form of G-d.

In light of that, I considered substance abuse to be disrespectful towards God because it is damaging His property.

I left her very confused because I couldn't well explain M/s dynamics to her.

So my question to you monotheists is: do you consider self-abuse such as addiction to be disrespectful towards G-d?

Great topic, Steve!!!

While not affiliated with any of the groups in the title, I am monotheistic in my outlook.  Can I still chime in?

No.  I never saw drinking and drugging (and drugging) as having anything to do with God.  Here I am, with free will, on a planet where all sorts of things grow in the wild, or are created with God-given intelligence.  Hell, hiking through the natural wonders of Oregon with a fungus among us was as close I got to going to church.

I went to catholic school and I was taught that any abuse that I did to my body was a sin against god.

Being a little heretic shit disturber, I took pleasure in abusing it ;-)

Ah, Christian Woman

With so much  naturally growing around us that can be intoxicating and therefore because of the feeling it gives,it may create addiction, I fail to see how partaking of anything natural can be disrespectful. I once wondered how it was mankind in it's history discovered so many intoxicants and things that could be made into intoxicants by using a simple natural process, in the case of liquids, brewing.

In the case of alcohol, of all the beverages available for consumption, they are of ancient discovery and recipe, not much, if anything intoxicating can be attributed  to modern life, so addiction is also ancient. The discovery of such things, using natural processes if it is considered nature is made by God, then it stands that addiction is part of God.

Brain -> RE: A question for the Christians, Jews, and Muslims. (2/26/2010 10:39:54 PM)

I believe I can provide an answer to this question because the majority of my life (90%)  I have been Greek orthodox.

When Eve bit the apple God kicked us out of “Eden” and that means he gave us the free will and responsibility to govern our lives to do good or bad.   Humans kicked out of Eden they are no longer God’s property unless they satisfy the criteria and they desire to return to heaven when they die.  You can’t become god’s property until the game of life is over.  It’s just like you can’t win a baseball game until the game over, like Yogi said, “It’s ain’t over until it’s over.”

the body of a christian is the temple and servant of the triune God.

Not sure where the monothiest came from.

Not particularly. I consider it an undesirable state and one that isn't pleasing to G-d, but not disrespectful. Doing lines off the Torah however... I'd consider that to be disrespectful.

Not a monotheist...not really much of anything religiously, but no, I do not consider addiction or any similar form of abuse to be in any way related to god.

Hello DS,

Not a monotheist here but if someone fits in that system then yes, abuse of drugs, etc. is abuse of God's property.

The body as the "temple of the Lord" and so forth.

The Divine is indifferent. The pagan god known as the Creator on the other hand presumably disapproves of substance abuse - and circumcision.

I scanned through the responses and have decided tio respond thusly ;

The truth is all that matters. Chirsianity is depenent upon Judaism, and in part so is Muslininsm.

Fact is, you don't WANT to know it all.

How people are ? I have five thousand years of evidence, and a couple more in the New Testament. If I tell, will you listen ? Otherwise I wil not waste my time. I am not pussyfooting around nymore, nor even attempting to "candy coat" anything. Nor do I engege in suberfuge.

Gimme the word.

I was raised Lutheran and thaught to question everything and most of my beliefs come from my own relationship with God and personal study of other religions.

To me, God gave us everything we would ever need and made us stewards of it all.  Like a good Parent, It gives us guidance, structure, nurture.  To refuse any of God's gifts, would be an insult. God wants us to be happy!  To abuse any of God's gifts is also an insult.  Because abuse of anything is damaging inclduing things that would on the surface seem healthy.  Enjoy all things in moderation seems to be the key.

Damn, I guess I'm doubly screwed.

I went out and got trashed one night and woke up in the morning circumcised.

Not feeling as much of a dick the morning after is one of the benefits of recurrent substance abuse.

Growing up quiet literally right next to a rehab, I can tell you that this is the speel they teach to all the patients, the patients NEED something that is beyond themselves in order to kick something that is already altering their very perception of life so drastically that they've fallen into a life style of drug or alcohol abuse. Think of god as a mental version of methadone, or as you very accurately pointed out, their master(drugs being their former master). It forces the patient to use something that is "beyond" them selves to help them alter their mind, action, and urges just as drugs used to alter their minds, actions, and urges.

and not surprisingly, it works.who knew that "god" is convenient for making people act how you'd like them to act lol

I am not a monotheist, I believe we are all a part of God, therefore an expression of God... in fact since we are creators we are the God we seek...

In that sense I think it is disrespectful to God to destroy itself.
