Aloha. Dragon here on Hawaii Island, also known as the Big Island. The Tsunami here was basically a non-event, as in very little surge, and no damage that I have heard of. I went out with my skipper this morning from Kawaihae Harbor on his 36' sailboat, so as to get away from any major surges. By 11 am when the waves were scheduled to hit, we were 3 miles or so off shore. By 2 pm, we were back in the harbor, it was still surging about 12-18 inches, but no problems anywhere. It was a good drill however, and we had plenty of time to prepare. Essentially all coastal areas were evacuated, sirens were sounding all morning on the hour, planes and helecopters were flying along the coast, etc. One am radio station on Oahu kept broadcasting news etc, and actually got a little frustrated that there was so little to report. The worst that could happen is that people would ignore the next Tsunami warning, which could devistate areas. One in 1960 nearly wiped out Hilo, down on the other side of this island. And to whoever wrote it, Waikiki is not an island, it is the best known beach on Oahu, where Honolulu is. Dragon
