Does any other normally-sane person out there ever think about stockpiling food and weapons, or am I just watching too many movies about Armageddon? I imagine more of a societal/governmental breakdown than an appearance of the Four Horsemen but whatever your vision, I'd love your thoughts. I pose this question philosophically rather than politically. I mean no offense to any political/cultural/religious beliefs. (so this girl begs your kindness)

There's a lot of apocalyptic fiction (not movies as much as prose) that does suggest a very strong right/libertarian approach. That Jerry Ahern series from the '80s springs to mind for a start.

Yep, reminds me of all the disaster movies from the 70-80s.

dont watch these movies.  (seriously)

Also do not watch the earth quake news.   All of that wears on a person.

The Haitans probably feel a lot worse about it than you do.

"The Road" was memorably intense for me, and generally I'm a sucker for those movies.

Just as horror movies whisper to our less rational fears about what's under the bed, Armageddon movies work on our basic fear of losing access to food, shelter, and basic security. That's a lot less irrational, and if you wanna buy canned corn, do, but then make sure you go and cast a well-educated vote.

(and there are those who positively lust for a breakdown, because they think their guns will make them more important in that world. Don't live near them.)

Dat's my opinion.

I don't take it seriously. They have been predicting the end of the world for at least 50 maybe 100 years. They said it was going to happen when Hitler was around and they said it again other times like 2000 when we were supposed to have all these computer problems. So the answer is yes, you are watching too many of those movies.

We have been through worse, much much worse. The Great Depression, the 1960's riots, disco.

Many people forget that we came very close to an actual Communist revolt in the 1930's, when people were in fact starving.

Level heads and serious thinkers prevailed, and America came out better than ever.

The Road sounds like a sad movie to me.

Um, yeah, humankind has been passing down stories about the end of the world since the beginning of time. It hasn't happened yet, so I wouldn't be too concerned. My grandpa was constantly trying to predict when the rapture was going to take place. One year, he told my mom that it was going to happen on such-n-such a day and my mom said, "Well, I guess if we're still here on the day after that, then I guess we'll know that we didn't get taken up in the rapture." LOL! She really is a sadist! My aunt, my grandpa's daughter, said that the bible said that no one would know what day the rapture was going to happen and that she could see Jesus sitting up in heaven with a calendar with a day scheduled for rapture then having to cross it out saying, "Well, we can't use that day now cause Dr. Rice found out about it."

Personally, I don't believe that an alleged supreme being would ever do anything like that and that's my take on that religion and precisely why I'm not a christian.

All the time,it's why I want to work towards self sufficiency in a remote place eventually.

I don't see anything wrong to be prepared for the possibility of disaster. However, like everything the extent is largely based on your situation.

Like I don't see anything bad about have enough food for a few month, and water. You just rotate your stock, so nothing goes expired, in short it doesn't cost anything.

Nothing wrong, getting some solar panels if you can afford it, maybe it's not the ultimate savvy investment, but its not the worst either with tax incentives, you should eventually break even on it.

Nothing wrong, or crazy about owning a gun or two. Just learn how to use it.

Nothing wrong, with having a garden either.

Anyway, most things a person would need to know or have in a disaster is either interesting to learn, or costs little over the long run.

If I were really rich, hell I'd probably buy one of those old nuclear missile silos and build a house on it, and stock the underground with all kinds of cool shit. Cost and worth to a person is largely dependent upon income. If one is making 20K a year it might not make sense to hedge a lot of resource against an improbable event, if one is making a million, it probably makes sense to throw some resources. If one has a family, I'd think having a couple months of food would be mandatory if you can afford it.

Your answers are appreciated. I think it would be prudent at ANY time to be self-sufficient. Perhaps I wouldn't worry about crazy scenarios if I weren't so sadly DEPENDENT upon civilization to provide for my needs.

And that is a problem for me. I do not, and would not want to use the amount of canned stuff I would need to stockpile to feed my family for a few months, so I would regularly would have food spoil, and that is not something I find acceptable.

The emergencies we are prepared for are more along the lines of me, or a kid getting ill enough to make not going to have to go out and buy groceries for some days an appreciable help. Or the days that live just happens and time gets away from us. Being able to pull of a nice meal on days like this is what I am prepared for.

I like to cook, and I have a well stocked kitchen and pantry, as that makes my everyday live easier, and I would be able to fed us for some time, but no where near that long.
I do keep a small vegetable garden, and even have a teeny, tinsy green house. But that is because I like to garden, and I love fresh veggis and salad, not because I try to be self sufficient.

We are prepared for maybe about a week or two in an emergency, and considering where we live, I am pretty sue that is enough.
