barelynangel -> National Anthems (2/28/2010 3:17:09 PM)

Okay in watching the Olympics, it really has just occured to me that "The Star-Spangled Banner" doesn't actually mention USA or anything of the sort. It doesn't mention our country.

So i am curious since there are many countries represented on these boards, how many countries national anthems don't mention the actual country? Does anyone know of others?

Just something that just occured to me.

Just checked and Canada's national anthem does mention Canada in a couple areas in that song.

barely, like so many I have always thought that "America the Beautiful" would have made a much better National Anthem then The Start Spangled Banner."

I don't think "God Save the Queen" mentions the country, at least not in the first verse.

You had to check Bear!!! Shame on you. I oughta paddle you for that but you'd like it too much!

Interesting little bit about the Canadian National Anthem. It was first written in French, commissioned by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, the Honourable Théodore Robitaille, for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony.

And only has the word Canada in it once.

Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

When it was translated into English 16 years later, they put it in a few times!

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Yeah, really... I'm mean jeeze, Bear. I'm not Canadian and I don't know all the words to the Canadian Anthem... but even I know the first two words. Jeeze. [:)]

Well no, but it is written about a specific battle.

estah -> RE: National Anthems (2/28/2010 4:34:43 PM)

The German national anthem does not mention Germany, It mentions German fatherland, but not Germany.

They changed some of the meaning of the first version. I attempted a translation, but I'm probably a bit off on some of it. My French isn't that good, but I like to practice and I had to look up a lot of words. I'm sure there is someone else that can translate it better than I can, but it was fun to do. Anyway, this is what I got:

O Canada
Land of our ancestors
Your head is encircled by our flowering glory!
Because we know to carry the sword,
And it knows to carry the cross! <---That could be why they changed the words, these last two lines here.
Your history is an epic
Of the most brilliant exploits.
And your value is strengthened with faith
Protect our facilities and our rights
Protect our facilities and our rights.

Yeah, the new and improved version sounds way better. I bet kittnsol would do a better job translating than I could, though. But I like to try.

LadyAngelika -> RE: National Anthems (2/28/2010 5:05:42 PM)

Here is a more accurately translated version that I found on Wikipedia. And French is my first language as well ;-)

O Canada!
Land of our ancestors,
Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious
garland of flowers.
As in thy arm ready to wield the sword,
So also is it ready to carry the cross.
Thy history is an epic
Of the most brilliant exploits.
Thy valour steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights
Will protect our homes and our rights.

It is actually pretty different after O Canada! ;-)

Umm folks, i know you are really proud of Canada, but this thread is really about anthems that don't have the country's name in it. I don't mean to interfere with the many many renditions of Canada's but it really doesn't answer what the OP is asking. Thanks.

TxRanger -> RE: National Anthems (2/28/2010 5:09:52 PM)

Let's see...

Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!
Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great!
Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test
O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

Yea it's mentioned.

Not at all. You did a brilliant job.

Ce sont presque exactement les même conneries que dans la Marseillaise. Que de la merde.

What barely is trying to convey here, is that you fuckers from the northern netherlands should just fuck off and freeze.

Hilariously, I was born in Marseille (not that you give a shit), but France and the French are mentioned OFTEN in the French national anthem.

It's a hideous song, with disgusting lyrics. I recommend this one, as an alternative:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLq7EcvRaf0&feature=fvw

Aux armes, etcaetera. Fuck the national anthem.

LadyAngelika -> RE: National Anthems (2/28/2010 5:18:51 PM)

My other Nation, the anthem goes as follows:
  • The Schweizerpsalm was first written in German refers to the country with Betet, freie Schweizer, betet!
  • The Psalm svizzer  or Romansh translation refers to the country with ura liber Svizzer, ura.
  • The Cantique suisse or French version does not have la Suisse
  • The Salmo svizzero or Italian versions does not have la Svizzera.
Now try juggling 4 official languages!

I always like Canada's national anthem. When was it adopted as the national anthem? Are there any other Canadian songs that might reach "Anthem" status? What is the best Canadian city to visit? Is there a national cuisine of Canada? What is the national bird of Canada?

kittinSol -> RE: National Anthems (2/28/2010 5:21:55 PM)

Fuck all national anthems, and fuck all flags, and fuck it all. Fuck [8D] . Nations are disgusting.

But of course. We wouldn't want you getting those pretty panties in a bunch.
