No we don't go in for social cleansing.

Not lately, maybe.  What's that got to do with imposing the punishment that fits the crime?

Aneirin -> RE: Releasing the Yorkshire Ripper (3/2/2010 6:47:23 PM)

I am in favour of the short rope treatment for multiple murderers, that meaning we shouldn't be paying for Sutcliffe or for that matter Ian Huntley who committed the most heinous of crimes. But for those that find themselves committed through mental disorders, my belief is they are wanted by those that treat mental health acts of criminality for further analysis, so, they have a use, where a short rope would be an end to the matter beyond the pathological measuring and general poking around.

LadyEllen -> RE: Releasing the Yorkshire Ripper (3/2/2010 7:02:08 PM)

Not to mention that the state of mind of an offender (which doesnt indicate simply mentally ill or healthy) is an important factor to be weighed when sentencing that few would support removing.

All I can say is, wow..he must have had some attorney..to off thirteen people and only get twenty years of concurrent sentences. I honestly, think no amount of psycho therapy could cure any kind of schizophrenia that makes someone just kill that many people. If they're trying to say that he's cured now, and he's on some kind of medication for the condition, what happens when he goes off his meds? Unless, they've performed a frontal lobotomy on the guy...and I don't know if they still do that..then regardless of his age..he STILL presents a danger to  society and I hope that he remains incarcerated!
I don't know if they have the death penalty in UK, but if all evidence pointed to that it was him, only him, beyond a shadow of a doubt, and if they're done with their research at the mental hospital..then why not put him to sleep and give his organs (if he's healthy) to a sick person?
Just an idea.

LadyEllen -> RE: Releasing the Yorkshire Ripper (3/2/2010 7:38:26 PM)

It was actually 20 concurrent life sentences ES, and he's now served close on 30 years.

A life sentence here can mean serving in prison for anything from about ten years to literally life as in until you die in gaol. Release at any stage is subject to assessment of risk and is on licence - you can be recalled to prison at any time "according to Her Majesty's pleasure" to serve as much more as is thought fit, but more often a recall is the consequence of breaching the terms of a licence which in theory could be any restriction or obligation placed on you as a condition of your release. In short life sentences do not expire, regardless of release into the general population.

He should stay until he goes room temperature.
If I was one of the victim's families though I'd be clammering to authorities to "let him out!"
Prisons are for keeping criminals "in" and for keeping people like me "out."

NorthernGent -> RE: Releasing the Yorkshire Ripper (3/3/2010 11:10:39 AM)

In my mind the purpose of jail is punishment and rehabilitation. My idea of a civilised society is one that seeks to help one another as opposed to one that seeks revenge - so punish and rehabilitate.

So I believe that he should be assessed and a decision made on that basis i.e. whether or not he remains a threat to society.

Irritating also that the Bulger killers should be released to a new life in Australia given that a large majority of skilled  Britons want to move there but can't due to the points system or other obstacles put in their way like finance. What sort of message is this sending out to those Britons, crime does pay, working hard and staying within the law does not ? What about the Australians, are the Australian people knowing that they are going to get two child killers on their streets. Australia used to be an island prison on the other side of the world, where criminals were sent, I wonder how that now sits with the Australians are they happy to accept two more British prisoners.

seems theyre in the UK; news tonight reports Venables has been recalled to prison (so theyre already out) having breached the terms of his licence.

E

More misinformation then to no doubt fox the interested parties from discovering their whereabouts.

Anyway, an update as of today, the BBC1 politics programme news has just said he who was Venables has had his ass hauled back into prison apparently on suspicion of child pornography. If that is so, from his crime of murder at age ten involving a child younger than himself, to his situation now, allegations of child pornography, he has clearly not been rehabilitated.

truckinslave -> RE: Releasing the Yorkshire Ripper (3/8/2010 12:05:59 AM)

One of the arguments used by anti-death-penalty folks here is; "we'll give him life withou parole. He'll never get out, never have the opportunity to kill anyone else". To which we reply, in part: "There's no such thing as life without paole. Someone, someday, will try to get him released; and they will quite possibly find some judge weak-minded enough that they will succeed".

20 life sentences equals, more or less, 30 years? 1.5 years per murder?

Shoulda given him the nedle and been done with it.

many people appear to find acceptable and that is to make a value judgment on someone's life.

The judgment has clearly been made that his life is of greater vaue than those of his victims.
