Brain -> Why the poor and demoralized of America dont vote (3/2/2010 11:48:34 AM)

If you don't vote for your interests you play right into the hands of those who wish to control everything.  Follow the money.  Learn if your representatives are in the pockets of special interests that are opposed to bettering your life in favor of corporate greed, and then, vote them out.

Sicko - Chilling Excerpt by Tony Benn

My favorite part of the entire film, "Sicko," by Michael Moore. Tony Benn, British politician, talks about why the poor and demoralized of America don't vote, and have no freedom. Veteran British socialist Tony Benn speaks. Corporate Politics Health Care Moore Democracy

Tony Benn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Perhaps partially due to his length of time in the House of Commons, and his campaign to renounce his inherited title, he is considered by many today as one of the most popular politicians in the UK[2];

Since leaving parliament, Benn has also become more interested in the grass-roots politics of demonstrations and meetings, and less in parliamentary activities. He has been a vegetarian since the 1970s.

His mother's theology had a profound influence on Benn, as she taught him to support the prophets and not the kings, as the prophets taught righteousness.[4]

Benn met US-born Caroline Middleton DeCamp (born 13 October 1926, from Cincinnati, Ohio) over tea at Worcester College in 1949 and nine days later he proposed to her on a park bench in the city. Later, he bought the bench from Oxford City Council and installed it in the garden of their home in Holland Park. Tony and Caroline had four children - Stephen, Hilary, Melissa and Joshua, and ten grandchildren. Caroline Benn died of cancer on 22 November 2000, aged 74, after a career as a prominent educationalist.

as a former political ground thug, I can assert that from my observations, both of you are correct lol.

I used to get asked(right before the last presidential elections)"what party is that black dude?"
or "what party is that Old Fella"

before that the jaw droppers were things like,
(and non of these were all that uncommon D8)

"what's a politician"

"term limits, like for prison?"

"Can I unregister to vote?"(Really)

"Oh,But I already have my license"
(when asking if they were registered to vote)

or

"Oh, I failed that test"
(again, when I asked if they were registered to vote)

or

"oh, I didn't know it was election day"
(when ,again, just asking if they were registered to vote)

"What do you mean residential address, that's where I get my mail, the HCbox?

me"no, you don't understand, the registry of voters validates your name and signature with your residential address..."

*several minutes later*

me,very kurt now"If I were driving you home...where would I drop you off"

"but I get my mail at the HCbox"
me"...........sorry to bother you"

the list goes on

and on

and on

and on

and that's just talking to people, it gets even worse after you're trying to validate some 1000 signatures and half the fuckers forgot that they had or hadn't reregistered with new address's ect. ect. ect.

I thought most people were able to answer "where do you live' by the time of grade school lol

Tony Benn is a pain in the arse for being born far too long ago to not be more active in Parliament today. Like or loathe his policies, he's one of a very few politicians worth giving the time of day to.

There's others. Dennis Skinner and Ken Livingstone both spring to mind.

As someone who very rarely votes, I'd say that's close. For years, I voted for the lesser of two evils, and just can't do it anymore. My thought process was, "OK, if this guy gets elected he won't do any of the things I'd like to see done; whereas if the other guy gets in, he'll probably do at least some of the things I want done. So I'll vote for the guy who'll do some of the things I want done, even though I think he's as much of a corrupt, incompetent slimeball as the other guy."

But that doesn't work anymore, because none of them do anymore what  I want to see done. Neither party even comes close to representing my interests. I can't find anyone anymore who gives me a reason to vote for them. Even the "lesser of two evils" thing doesn't work anymore. I'm done. Checked out. I only vote at the local level, because that's the only level of government that actually responds to my concerns. Anything above that, they're going to do whatever their corporate sponsors tell them  to do, and it has nothing to do with me.

I don't think that Brains post is true at all. A lot of poor folk must have voted in November, 2008. It wasn't those rich evil conservatives that voted Obama into office.

Louve00 -> RE: Why the poor and demoralized of America dont vote (3/3/2010 4:23:38 AM)

Couldn'ta been all those young folk that was cluttering up the rallies, conventions and everything else.  You know, the young ones no other election could convince it was a worthwhile thing to do?? Only those poor, uneducated poor folk. [8|]

See, here's the trouble. It's ALWAYS "vote them out." 2006 cleaned out thet e Republicans---or wait, did it? Mostly it sent moderates packing for rubber stamping Bush, leaving the conservatives where their districts would support that. Now another anti-incumbent move will shift back to Republicans.

Stop. Vote FOR someone. Get involved--it's just not difficult. Literally, you can be one of the people sitting around the table deciding who gets support and moves ahead to the ballot.

I'm VERY happy with my state and federal representatives. My state assemblyman for example---EVERYBODY here knows him and likes him. He represents our interests, and nobody gives a damn what party he's from (he's a Democrat in a heavily Republican district).

Congress gets more complicated--but the NY 23rd elected the guy who knew and understood our interests. Yes, there are those who want the national conservatives to run things, but the majority of voters picked an independent (running on the Democrat slot) in a heavily Republican district over a conservative carpetbagger completely ignorant of local issues (he was even told what they would be in advance at a debate), proclaiming his love for Glenn Beck (literally) instead.

Find people who stand FOR something, who get the local issues, and who want to help solve them with reasonable approaches. Then elect them.

Continually cleaning house, just throwing the bums out, is how we got here. It's what we've done for decades.

Be proactive.

Cleaning the bums out is not how we got here. A decent portion of the bums spend their lives in office with districts hand drawn for them so they never have to leave short of conviction and jail time. Honestly, I've not run across a politician in the last 10 years that I'd waste the piss to put him out if he were on fire.

Too often a vote for either side is like handing the extremity of that party keys to the legislative branch. Give it to the democrats and the green haired crazies and coffee sippers sit up in what amounts to an orgasmic frenzy at the thought of limiting life for everyone else. Vote for a Republican and they'll tout business all day long while lining their own pockets. I'm damned sick of both of them.

Given the power, Democrats will eventually strangle the constitution. Republicans are more likely to ban it outright despite their espoused love for it. What both sides do is jockey for power and to do so, they must court those in the country who live at polar opposites in terms of political stances.

In the meantime, I'll ride the wave of voter anger and throw bums out all day - especially those who insult me by calling themselves a public servant.

Yeah, right.
