One possible point of confusion is that some people apparently have what seem to be "custom" avatars and not just the ones that CM makes available for use. I would much prefer a custom avatar myself, but it seems you have to have chosen a custom avatar much earlier on because the feature has been discontinued.
Of course I'd like to see a return of the custom avatar feature, but I guess it's one more thing they'd have to approve before letting it on the site.
Pity.
