Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, a freshman Democrat from Arizona, has a sure-fire way to connect with angry voters: a proposal to cut pay for members of Congress.

Kirkpatrick today announced she is introducing the Taking Responsibility for Congressional Pay Act, which would cut pay for all members by 5% beginning next January. She said it would be the first time salaries have been reduced since April 1, 1933, " in the midst of the Great Depression."

Maybe a good first step in getting those bastards to wake up?

Certainly not the worse idea floated by a member of Congress...of course there is a vast difference from proposal to enactment.

Maybe she could first get Nancy Pelosi to give up her private jet which is costing about 5 million a year to operate.

Is this the new jet of urban legend, or the same one the previous speaker used?

A lady running for state treasurer in Massachusetts believes elected officials shouldn't get "pensions."

Agreed PA, All 535 members of congress should also be part of the same health care plan they want us to be part of. That also will not happen.

Yup. While they're at it, roll back their benefits to the point of the average American.  Have it readjusted regularly so they actually care about the welfare of the folks they represent.  There's a bubble around Washington and the sooner it's gone the better.

Here is a great website for everyone to check out...Fleming.house.gov John Fleming ( R ) Louisiana, has an on-line petition which would require congress to use the exact health care plan they are forcing every other American to use. Warning: The website crashes often..

Pay them what the average American earns.

They want more, address that first.

That's kind of a problem. If elected officials don't make enough money, you know who is going to run for those jobs? Rich people, because they'll be the only ones that can afford to take them. It's best to pay them decent salaries. However, I do think that if they have to be on the same health care plan, then they'll work on making a decent one. If people in Congress are trying to exempt themselves from being on the healthcare plan that they're proposing for everyone else, that doesn't say too much for the plan they're trying to create. However, don't get me wrong, I'm all for healthcare reform. I think that we should have healthcare just like they do in UK, France, Canada, and all those other great countries where wealth doesn't determine your access to healthcare.

However, I do like the sound of this, despite what I just said. I think I was having a dyslexic moment because the second line you wrote didn't register, yet.

Unlike, say, now?

Actually, I don't really care about their salaries. Least of our problems.
