I believe 'munch' came from 'meeting over lunch' and is an american term. Within BDSM it has come to mean a casual, social get together, usually in a safe vanilla environment such as a pub or bar and mainly in street attire.
Its a good way to get to know people and find out about the local scene. Many people dont want to 'club' but still like to meet people and this givs that oppotunity. Usually they happen at weekends but thankfully some are held on mid week evenings.

Here's a great primer for munches written by Jay Wiseman:

That's what it is, but the word genesis of the word is more specific.  Back in the 80's, some people who posted on the old newsgroup alt.sex.bondage decided to get together in the flesh.  Their meeting place was a burger joint in Palo Alto, California.  They called this gathering "a burgermunch."  As the idea spread, it was shortened to "munch."

When ASB was flooded with spam, the posters created a new newsgroup called soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm which exists to this day.
