Gregg & Bunning - two of the same – I bet Bunning wouldn't balk at a 10 million dollar bonus if he was still pitching - and I bet Gregg won't vote against a congressional pay raise.

This guy deserves better,

“I'm 25, a disabled vet and on social security. I can barely make ends met, I really could have used that check. After fighting for this country of ours you'd think they would take care of us better.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A measure to give some 57 million elderly people, veterans and persons with disabilities a $250 check was rejected by the Senate on Wednesday, a setback for the powerful seniors' lobby.

President Barack Obama has called for Congress to approve the payments to make up for their benefits not increasing this year, but the Senate defeated it 50 to 47.

The payments would have added $13 billion to a $108 billion job-creation package pending in the Senate.

Congress approved payments last year as part of the $862 billion stimulus package.

Social Security payments for the elderly and disabled will stay flat this year for the first time since 1975 because they are tied to consumer prices, which decreased amid the worst economic recession in 70 years.

That follows a year in which payments rose by 5.8 percent, largely due to a spike in gasoline prices.

"It is wrong to turn our backs on seniors in this moment of economic difficulty," said Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who sponsored the amendment.

But Republican Senator Judd Gregg pointed out that the bill would defeat the purpose of indexing Social Security payments to inflation.

"The law says it shouldn't be given," Gregg said.

At least 10 Democrats agreed with Gregg and joined 40 Republicans to defeat the proposal.

I really don't see why the elderly would be more effected in the downturn, seeing they draw Social Security, and presumably retired, they aren't exactly getting laid off.

Personally, I don't support this at all.

From your article.

I guess Need to use you is a self made millionaire that has no use for SSI. My parents were "notch babies".... born in the early 20th century and fucked on their SSI - no matter how much anyone lobbied, their lower payments were never rectified. More recently, the Bush administration halted seniors and chronically ill from purchasing lower cost meds from abroad. Do you fantacise that the cost of living is LESS for someone retired or disabled ? Here - enjoy this can of cat food as your only meal of the day !

I could use the $250 to help Mom pay either the electric bill or my internet service and student loans.  Mom could of used hers for a doctors visit since she does not get Medicare yet.  Its just wrong what these yahoos are doing...

If someone is eating cat food as a means to save money, then they need a course on basic shopping.

No, I theorize that since they are on a fixed income that adjusts for living expenses, that they aren't as effected by the downturn as those not in such a position. Thus special compensation shouldn't be forthcoming.

You're bitching about something entirely unrelated, if the OP was about a certain group getting paid less simply because of happenstance of birth date, then I'd agree all things being equal they should get paid the same as the rest.

If you really, and I mean really talk to anyone on SS about their pay increases, you will see that the Medicare premiums rose also.  Coincidently the SS pay increase equals the Medicare Part B premium increases so that there is no increase in spending power, even when prices increased.  It is sad.

Isn't that happening to the non-retired as well? As in you get a .50 cent pay increase but the health care premiums are rising faster than wage increases, and the general rate of inflation, eating the pay increase.

My point isn't that those on SSI are doing great, my point is they aren't suffering more than others.

I have my Medicare premiums pay for by the state.  I am paying for my own dental work (about half of my SS check), student loans, internet access, gym, one online game (not WoW...) my Medicare D premium and any thing I want to get afterwards...oh, lets not forget the co-pay for doctors visits (after the deductable is paid) and the costs of medications.

I apologize for the misspellings...my dictionary is in the bedroom and frankly I am too tired to go get it.

When there isn't the money to spend, we simply cannot spend it, no matter how much some need it. They can give over here and take over there and aren't thinking of what it is to manage with their give and take and decisions. The whole system is a mess.

The thing is, we need to stop all increases for those in power as well. Stop handing out what isn't there to hand out.

My son could really use a number of things I simply cannot provide him and some could hurt really badly, so I could really use that check, but if the money isn't there, I am more than happy to live without... as normal. Luck of the draw in life I guess. But to see so much wasted and spent with nothing to balance it out and to see them take from the wrong places and give to the wrong places and their excuses and reasons... is a lil hard to take.
