I've never posted in Politics before, but this thread caught my eye.  I've done extensive volunteer work my entire adult life, and I donate 10% of my income each month, primarily to the struggles of low-income workers.  I have strong and (I believe) well-thought-out political positions, but I don't discuss them on the internet, because I see no value in making statements to people unlikely to change their own positions.  I think political change only comes through action, and through recruiting interested others to perform those actions with you.  Thanks very much for the thread, eyesopened.

I did want to respond to this:

The United States is in a state of collapse, and I have absolutely no reason to believe it's salvagable.

Did you know, Panda, that the number of people engaging in volunteer work in the US is at an all-time high?  I am more hopeful than ever about the CERTAINTY of change, not even its likelihood.  In the 1960s, students protested, but a large percentage of America was comfortable.  Now, almost nobody is comfortable.  It's not just students protesting.  These are far more revolutionary times than the 1960s or the 1930s.  Literally anything is possible, over the next 20 years.  It is wonderful, and exciting.  Leave if you want, but the show, and the action, is here.

Compared to many here my contributions are small indeed…but I do what I can. I have been a member of Operation Photo Rescue since Katrina. OPR restores photos damaged in disasters across the nation.

It seems many people when faced with disaster grab their most important possessions, their photo albums, to take with them as they flee. Often they are damaged by the elements. At OPR hundreds of digital restorers spend hours volunteering their expertise to repair family treasures.

There is nothing better than to read the thanks, often written with tearstains on paper, from people who thought their family pictures were beyond hope of repair.

I think every heartfelt contribution is valuable. What a neat way to volunteer and help your fellow citizens!!! Very cool.
