barelynangel -> Census Bureau is hiring (3/6/2010 5:19:37 AM)

I saw on the news in the Nashville area that the Census Bureau is hiring right now, and i swear they said they are offering a pretty good salary of $17 dollars an hour, even though its only a temp position and that it doesn't sound like fun, going around your community getting the census filled out by people and collecting them.

All in all, i figured some people may find something in this so i thought i would send it out as so many people seem to still be out of work. Check with your local census bureau, i think Nashville said they are hiring 1600 people so maybe they will have jobs in many areas.

for some reason no one is interested in Harrisburg PA.    they had it on the news.

littlewonder -> RE: Census Bureau is hiring (3/6/2010 9:38:44 AM)

They would need to pay me a whole lot more than $17 an hr to have door after door slammed in my face. Blah door to door...no thanks...been there done that job with other companies.

Yeah, this!  Being an enumerator can be a seriously shitty job.  Having known people who've done it, its something I wouldn't want to do unless I really had no other choice financially.  Knowing what it was like 10 years ago - I'd never want to do it now.  On the other side of the coin though, a lot of the government agencies have been getting very few applications for a lot of their openings and have ended up hiring a lot less people then they really needed to.

All job openings are listed at usajobs.gov  - depending on the agency and if you can (or cannot) apply online there might be some paperwork involved and some agencies aren't offering benefits or insurance for most of the temporary job openings anymore.  They do tend to pay well though (or at least decently.)

I really loved this when I did it in 2000. It was a blast! I can't understand why anyone would get stressed over doorknocking. I don't recall a single person slamming a door in my face or even being the least bit unpleasant. I had so much fun, I'm doing it again this year, even though I don't really need the job.

lol i looked at the test for that and the questions were like "if there are 2 adults and 3 children in the household, how many people live?"

There are currently 3 million applications for 1.2 million jobs. In certain parts of the country they can't fill them. They can't pass the timed test, and or the homeland security back ground test.

pahunkboy -> RE: Census Bureau is hiring (3/8/2010 8:20:38 AM)

No.    In certain parts- ppl wont apply because they are afraid of being SHOT when they GPS someones front door.

There.  I said it.

There are folks way- more fringe then me.

I thought this was bogus, but found the info listed below.

I can see a few reasons to do this - my neighborhood's relatively new and it was 3 years before Google and Mapquest caught up with us.  Old maps had completely different platting and if you entered my address you'd end up with something completely bogus about 5 miles away.

It's a hell of a lot easier to use a GPS to get to your locations than to use paper maps.

Why is the Census Bureau using Global Positioning Systems (GPS)? The Census Bureau uses Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to help locate addresses. A handheld computer is equipped with GPS and is used during our address canvassing operation. Address canvassing is a field operation where census workers systematically travel all known and new streets and roads to identify every structure where people live or could potentially live and update our address list and maps. For the 2010 Census, we attempted to collect GPS coordinates for each structure to make sure it is recorded in the correct location. The census workers also confirmed, added and deleted addresses using a GPS-equipped handheld computer. All this work was done to ensure a complete and accurate address list for delivering the 2010 Census questionnaires next year. Are the GPS coordinates collected during the 2010 Census operation kept confidential? Yes. All address information, including GPS coordinates, is protected by the confidentiality requirements of Title 13 of the United States Code. All Census Bureau employees take an oath for life to protect identifiable information about individuals and businesses gathered by the agency. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share respondents' answers with the IRS, FBI, CIA or any other government agency. The penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment of up to 5 years, or both.

I am not too concerned about the GPS.   I am intown - and that is pretty set in stone as to what house is where.  So it is redundant.

cuckoldmepls -> RE: Census Bureau is hiring (3/8/2010 1:08:39 PM)

The news said the other day that even when people aren't boycotting the census, 30% of the population throws it away anyway. Personally, I'm throwing mine away in protest of everything especially the fact that they are using the census to provide representation for Illegal Aliens. That's just plain wrong.

They also said that if you don't return the form, they will be forced to send someone out to your house. Well they can ring the doorbell, and knock all they want, but unless they have a warrant I'm not answering the door. News flash for people who don't know the law. You don't even have to answer the door to the police, unless they have a warrant that allows them to kick down your door.

Besides it's girl scout cookie time. It just gives me another excuse to not answer the door.

DarlingSavage -> RE: Census Bureau is hiring (3/8/2010 1:25:17 PM)

I and many others rely on census data for research. I think it's very important that people fill these things out completely and accurately.
