I have a stupid, but honest question.  What is the proper pronunciation for Domme?  Should it be pronounced Dom-may, and if so, why?   (I hate the sound of it)   Who came up with this word and pronunciation?  Does anyone know?

Femme is not pronounced fem-may!

The majority of people I know from around the country just say dom.  Does it REALLY matter?  Some folks get bent out of shape if you are ignorant enough to say dom when referring to a Dom-may.

I just prefer "female dominant"... I can't stand the way "dom-may" sounds either.

I say "dom".  It's a fabricated word, I reserve the right to use my prefered pronounciation.  I agree with you, dom-may always sounds a bit 'put on' for me.

Agreed. I've only heard one person every say "Dom-may". Never quite sounded right.

Domme appears pseudo-French, so it should be pronounced as one syllable with an elongated "mm" sound.  Words like "comme" and "femme" are good examples.  If "Domme" was supposed to be pronounced with two syllables, it would have an accent aigu (acute) on the e, and, most likely, a second e following the accented e to signify the feminine gender.

I dislike the use of "domme", whatever the pronunciation.   It's an inappropriate abbreviation of "dominant".  It is unnecessary to modify the category of "dominant" to specify the gender of the person inhabiting the category, particularly as English is not a language requiring gendered nouns.  Furthermore, from the beginning of the use of "dominant" in BDSM, males and females both inhabited the category of "dominant"--thus women are in no greater need of unique designation than men.  Finally, as I said above, it's pseudo-French, and bad pseudo-French at that--it's just plain aesthetically displeasing.

WhiteRadiance, May I say thank You for asking this question. I have always had a problem with the pronouciation of this word too. And I agree with others, Dom-may sounds terrible to me.
Of course like another male sub already said, I'd use whatever pronouciation my Mistress preferred.  That is if I ever find another one to love honor and obey......sigh

I see it just like "blond" and "blonde". There should be no difference in the pronunciation.

I type it or write it as Domme to indicate the Female Domiant use of the word but pronounce it Dom.  Dom-may sounds odd to me also

Ditto.  I also use "dom" and not "domme" when typing.

Domme is kind of a morphological equivalent of femme.  Femme is the French word for woman or wife, but which also has the meaning of someone who is feminine as in "Butch/Femme".  If you are pronouncing Domme according to similar French pronunciation rules then it is just "Dom" or  you can enunciate the m putting a schwa sound on the end.   French rules don't put  a "may" unless something is accented  and in this case it would not be.   The may is probably more like a "me" that rhymes with "the" in American English. It isn't really important though because it is much like a lot of the other internet vocabularly which has evolved.  It is kind of a home made creative morphology and interesting from a Linquistic perspective.  Perhaps some day it will end up in a dictionary but I'm not sure that it has yet.  So get creative.  Maybe you'll coin the next bdsm word?

I remember back 10 years ago when they were shortening dominatrix to Domme back in the old days of the #femdom channel on IRC.  Are there any oldtimers who remember that?  I don't know if it was coined on IRC or if it dates even further back to the BBS services.

I pronounce it dominatrix (doh min uh trix).  That's what the word is short for.  It seems as though noone understands that, as you never see dominatrix used and people seem to think it's a harsh word if you do use it because everyone, myself included, has this image of a woman in black leather wielding a crop or whip associated with dominatrix.  um, something like your lovely picture, Radiance Staci.

Of course that image is more closely associated with B&D or S&M which is the realm of a Master or Mistress, than D/s which of course is the domain of a Dom or Domme or ummm Dominatrix.

If some uppity dope gets bent out of shape for the way you pronounce domme, you tell them listen here, the word is really dominatrix and I am one, so get back in line.

Interesting.

If any of you ever get to Memphis, look me up, I would just love to introduce you to some 'Dom-may' friends of mine and sit back and watch the fun after someone corrects them.....

To Me, it doesn't matter much and one time I'll pronounce it one way, and another time, another.  Someone once corrected the "dom-may" pronunciation because it means something derogatory in Japanese.  I told Her we are in the United States, not Japan, so I am not terribly concerned.

Personally, I like the term Femdom better amyway and tend to use that instead.

I once researched the word "domme," and there is no such word in the French language.  However, there is such a word in Dutch.  It is pronounced "dom" and means "dumb, or silly," as in domme gans, which means "silly goose."
