Termyn8or -> Music and more (3/7/2010 6:21:54 AM)

I spent about eight years of my life without it. I let my head clear, and stopped this outside influence. When I allowed it back into my life it became intense, as it was one of my favorite things. I mean during those eight years if a TV was on I would leave. I wanted no influence whatsoever. I was serious about it and my gillion dollars worth of equipment was stashed in closets and attics.

Sans the influence my mind eveloped a bit I think. It used to be a constant thing, now it is different. Even though I do crank it up to 400 watts or whatever, I want silence during the playing of a song. I still don't have a radio. I will not let someone else do the spinning. It is a random element and there are way too many of those these days. I choose what runs, I choose what I am exposed to, I choose what I want.

My rampant downloading of music is so I can choose. My main PC is like a jukebox, but with no slot for the money. I have gone after just about everything I have heard, and analysed it for possible influence. All the time I think of something and I have to find out what it was, what song was that Ma, when we used to turn up the radio in the 1964 Corvair ?

Well it has exploded. Perhaps I am an addict because now I am about to buy a second 500GB drive to hold it. I will not stop as long as my P2P program can connect. It flies, and I have learned the ins and outs. "They" don't want us doing this, and it has trouble connecting, then Windows pops up and says the program must close, send error report or don't send. That is when it runs the best and I get like 3MB/sec. I just move that out of the way and continue. In fact that PC is downloading something as we speak.

Is anyone else an avid, almost rabid downloader of tunes ? I mean I have a clipboard for people to write requests on, and then try to get them. My collection has grown to the point where it would be pointless to try to back it up, even on DVDRs. And I can't get enough, as if it were an addiction. I wonder if it really is. And was it long ago ?

I don't think I am again falling into a trap, but that is true of any carefully designed trap. All those years I did not shun musical instruments, with totally original music played on them, in fact I cherished it. I would not tolerate copies or covers. My aversion was to commercial music.

I am also getting more sophisticated in this. With a bit of work, I am organizing by group, and some by album when possible. I can drop one song or the entire album into a playlist now. I have learned and really this thing is becoming the jukebox of all time. I even have songs I hate, usually by others' requests. There are only a few artisits I don't and won't have.

Billy Joel used an ambulance to get to a concert, I made one exception for him by request - Stilleto.

Leonard Skynard sung "Why don't we dump them, people, to the botton of the sea, some fool comes around here wanna shoot either you or me".

Bruce Springsteen, a dual citizen who probably enjoys a bunch of tax benefit therefrom while using OUR governments coptright laws to make money, sung "Born in the USA". Without that song he would never have gotten banned.

Niel Diamond was taken off the shitlist. He only got there because I know people, some of them worked in the industry and here in Cleveland as he played the people working the stands and such all left their posts to see the concert as noone was in line anyway. He stopped the concert because of it saying that this was for "Paying custonmers only" What a motherfucker, but he got off the shit list because I realized that I too, am a motherfucker.

Now even with the exemptions, the collection is quite vast. If you are between 25 and 55 I can find those songs you sang along with the car radio to. (grammar I know, but you know what I mean) I have things so obscure it would blow your mind. I have so much, it is categorized by artist and I frequently have to google to find the artist to play the song OFF MY OWN COMPUTER ! What I would like to do is be able to direct the search only to one directory on my PC, which I used to do simply by generating a FND file in 98SE. I have found no way to do this in XP.

In short (too late I know) I would like a better way to manage this. Legality means nothing, this is an international forum and some countries have different coptright laws so it might be totally legal. How do you know where I am ? I know there are other downloaders here. How do you manage the collection the best ? I am to the point where I am redownloading things I already have. I have lost files somewhere in the abyss, but then after about three clones and a couple of OS reloads shit happens.

How do YOU put it all together ?

Rare and un-usual- hard to replace- would get some type of preferred status.

I have many books and vids on mine.   I try to avoid those I can easily get just anywhere.  But when I have one that is hard to find- then that file gets special attention.  I can easily replace the common items.
