Mauldin is almost entirely forgotten today.  But he chronicled World War II from a view nobody else ever did - unglamorous, day by day, from the POV of the grunts on the front lines who never asked for their jobs but did their weary best.

Good deal.

I remember being exposed to his work when I was a kid; we got the World Book encyclopedia annuals, and one year they profiled him, and I've always fondly remembered what he accomplished.

Oh sure, "Willie and Joe."
In the 50's we had those history books that showed pictures of Japs blown to pieces on Iwo Jima or someplace like that and no-one was "offended."
I wonder when all that "offended" crap started anyway?
