I was just watching the conservative ideas about  again building a better Britain post election when it was hoped by the conservative mouth piece their lot would be in power. On listening to what he said, he mentioned he wanted more engineers, scientists, designers, as that is what Britain needs to get it right, but right at the end of his list of good ideas, he mentioned he wanted Britain's abilities to be of value.

Now, this word value bothers me, not the word itself, but the context in which it is used, So, I wish to ask others, what do they understand as to the meaning of the word; Value and with it, it's partner; Quality ?

Is your understanding of the word different from what you thought it was ?

Does it matter ?

I first came across the difference between what the two words meant  and what I thought them to mean when I was involved in a company working towards the international  standard ; ISO 9000 accreditation, where I remember thinking, sneaky bastards.

Now when these politicians vying for power go on about quality and value, in which context are they using the words, the ISO 9000 way, or what people commonly believe value and quality mean, it's good value, and good quality whatever the price, it is acceptable etc

Quality = fitness for purpose, paying too much for something makes it bad quality because a cheaper alternative exists to meet the same need

Value = lowest price; not just for the initial expenditure but also for the whole life costing of the item.

As it seems to me, having to pay too much would make it a bad value for the reason you stated -- but its quality is an attribute that is independent of price.

I suppose it depends on what the customer is seeking; as long as it meets their needs and expectations then that is the real definition of quality. Excess focus on one attribute could take away from the overall performance of the product in terms of what the customer is looking for.

The only context in which I ever think of the Tories and value in the same sentence is: "The conservatives know the cost of everything and the value of nothing..."
