Winners of the Sprite Step Off

I'm not unhappy however, I'm less than thrilled that this competition is named for Sprite.

Why can't it just be called the Step Off? Why can't Sprite just be a corporate sponsor without throwing their name in?

I don't know if this is the same one that Level is talking about, but I wanted to see what he was talking about. I like dance.

Maine? I'd tell ya to learn to read, but that would make me a hypocrit since I didn't read the article initially. So, instead, I'll just point over at the text under my avatar.

Wasn't Stomp a big success? I thought the article said it all covering both sides and feelings. Personally I would be flattered if all of a sudden a whole group of people started imitating my traditions and actions. I certainly would not be insulted.

If people booed strictly for racial reasons then shame on them.

It looks like Coca-Cola is trying to weasel its way out of a racial controversy. From a strictly pragmatic point of view, I can’t say that I blame them.

I find the notion of cultural theft silly. Since humanity began cultures have been observing each other and saying: “Hey, look what they’re doing. That looks like a good idea (or "really tasty" or "like a lot of fun" or…). We should try that.” Imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.

Be nice if the whole world was one world and no third worlds in it. Then we would really have highly developed culture.

I would love to see the black man and woman freed to the point where they were up to speed with all they have to offer. So much of what is truly cool and interesting in our society has come from black folks, for example.

I do agree with the point that integration works both ways. You can't expect elements of black culture (hip-hop and stepping are good examples) to appeal to the greater demographic and then expect them not to want to participate.
Ummm I would say Rock n Roll would be a better example...or Jazz, or the blues, or R&B...they are all very much mainstream now but once were considered "negro" music.

Just a simple search: http://www.google.ca/search?q=learn+native+american+dance&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&redir_esc=&ei=3syVS5_IMs-38Qan-LmoBQ on those that teach Native American dances came up with 3,170,000 results.

I don't think it is 'cultural theft' to participate in any such activities persay. Competing? that might be a different matter. But the difference is and would be that in the Native American rituals there is a spiritual reasoning for the dance, therefore to do it without forethought or a reckless, uncaring attitude would be...kinda sacrilegious. If I wanted to compare this Step thing, the first question I would have is 'what is the concept/context for the dance and its origins???'. Without knowing that, it is hard to distinguish if it is thievery or not. Will have to get back to ya.

I think you'd have to ask yourself, is it insulting to even participate, or is it insulting to compete and furthermore, win? Who judges the abilities of one dancer's joy or spiritual connection, and who decides if they are worthy or unworthy of ...oh bla bla..enough said. lol

ATLANTA — Visit any of the nation's more than 100 historically black colleges or universities and you'll see clusters of men and women engaged in the rhythmic clapping and foot stomping routines known in black Greek circles as "stepping."

Now a white Arkansas team's win in an Atlanta step competition has started a fiery debate over the African-inspired tradition and whether the integration of a once-ethnically exclusive activity constitutes a form of cultural theft.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g0CiyQnstLPTPGAIas816aHbqqCQD9E42R581

The audience was wowed by the white team after their performance, but erupted into boos when they were announced as winners. Why?

yeh thats almost as bad as the muslims claiming the 2.5 million dead were a holocaust or WASPS took over the monetary system.

Imagine the culture shock!

I would disagree, but not totally. The reason being that we see these things as mainstream in this day and age, but there was a time when for some people that transition was painful.  That's over with for Rock n Roll and Jazz, but it's happening right now for hip-hop and apparently, step competitions.

You will LOVE Powell's if you like getting lost amongst a sea of books...lol. Make sure you visit the location on Burnside, and be sure to request a store map.

It's one of my favorite hangouts. If you enjoy good tea, be sure to stop in at The Tea Zone, just a few blocks behind Powell's. They also have yummy scones.

When are you visiting?

It is quite lovely. If you don't mind rain...lol. Actually, if you come in the summer, it's wonderful. Days rarely get over 85, dry and sunny. Summer only lasts for about a month though and then the rainy season kicks back in...lol. Okay, so I'm exaggerating a bit (but not by much).
