Looks like BofA is dropping the debit card overdraft fee in favor of simply declining the transaction (just like the days of yore.)

In the past, the overdraft fees led to things like the "$40 cup of coffee."

The full article's here.

With a couple of simple things, like a budget and simple math, you will never have to worry about excessive fees.

The bank’s overdraft policy will take effect on June 19 for new customers and in early August for existing ones./snip

I wonder why they cant stop it today?

that is 3 long months when we dont even know if that bank will be shut down by then.

Cap One called me on the phone last month. They IDed me ON TAPE and asked :

If you go over the limit it will result in a $29 fee, per month unless and until the balance is brought within the limit. Or would you rather we decline the transaction ?

I told them to just pay it, because if I am using it there is a reason. With the new understanding, now the card effectively has no limit at all. But if I buy a house or something for thrity grand, my next minimum payment will be be thirty grand plus thirty bucks. It's that simple. In a way it's like having one of the original American Express cards.

Federal law has changed and I have gotten notices from just about all my creditors about things like this. It really doesn't change things much, but the rules have changed slightly.

Tell you who's trying to treat me good right now - Citibank. They sent me checks at 3.9, then 2.9, and then 1.9 and 0.9. Now they have sent me checks for 0.0% ! It's only good for about a year, but what could I do with a year ? The limit on that card is well over twenty five grand and there is about nineteen left on it. I am thinking house, maybe.

Remember what my Dad taught me, when you walk into a bank, you are the CUSTOMER. You are how they make money. You are not some poor little waif they found laying on the side of the road. And in this case, you can take my Dad's words to the bank, literally.

I'm ashamed to say I have a Bank Of America Account. We've never overdrafted it though.

It's one of those cases to where I should switch to a small local bank, but haven't because there are a bazillion things tied to the stupid thing.

Switching to smaller, local banks is becoming a bit of a trend. I believe info is available at moveyourmoney.com

I have BOFA and Fifth Third. Bofa already has a fair overdraft policy imo. If you overdraft for under ten dollars, there is no fee (as long as it's caught up within a certain amount of time.) I overdrew at fifth third once for about a dollar and it ended up costing me around $70. That is ridiculous.

Yeah. I ran out of places to put it. The mattresses are stuffed, and the yard has so many mason jars buried in it it looks like a minefield!

B of A called me recently to alert me there were international charges on my credit card and asked if they were mine. They weren't. They were fraudulent charges. So they cancelled my card and I had a new one in a week. I am very satisfied.

Yeah I just wish they'd quit calling me EVERY SINGLE DAY about insurance. Enough already.

popeye1250 -> RE: Any BofA customers here? (3/12/2010 10:30:31 AM)

I was with Countrywide until BofA bought them out.
I've been trying to re-finance the condo at a lower rate for three months now, three diff people calling me, no-one knows what the other is doing etc.
With Countrywide I refinced twice within six weeks no problems!
