Great post! I too am a nonbeliever and I adore those who love to try and condem me for not believing. In regards to the god gives good teeth---I have a funny story. Not too long ago, I went to work on a Saturday morning---one of the coldest days of the year to take advantage of the overtime. I walk to work 99% of the time I rarely take my car out unless I have to; gas prices are way too high. So I am walking down the street focusing on the easy $100 I just made, and thinking about stopping at the bakery for a fresh loaf of bread to go with a dinner of chili and a car pulls up. The woman inside hands me a Jehova's witness watch tower and says "better days are coming." She must have thought I was poor and walking because I could not afford a car or maybe she thought I was homeless because no one in their right minds would be walking on such a cold day. She smiled at me and revealed a mouthful of broken rotten teeth. I smiled back making no attempt to take her brochure and said, "No thanks I have a great life and I don't believe in god." Perhaps I should have pointed at the building I just left and said, "Try there their dental insurance rocks! In 30 days you can get it no need to wait with blind faith." But I am nice.

That made me laugh.

I could block the guy that keeps on trying to persuade me there is a god but it is amusing to watch. When he made the comment about teeth I said " I have good teeth because I brush and floss" and his response was "who gave you the strength to brush?"

So I try to live my life in a way that would make those I love proud, and I don't worry about what might happen after I'm done, because time spent trying to eff the ineffable is time I could be using to play my guitar.[/VaguelyCurious]

This is my thinking too. I live my life in the hope that I make those that care for me proud and I live it to the full. If when my time comes and there is no "afterlife" I will have lived a good and happy life.

Form one who doesn't believe in god and I can say I have no religion, at least in the modern context. Yet I am quite spiritual ...

I have yet (in any discussion of god/religion) to see a definition of "spirituality."  Please advise.

I will try to explain/define my view of spirituality in a way which makes sense to me though it may not be the corrct way!

I see spirituality as having a deep inner sense that there is something greater then my sense of self and my place in this universe. It is having that instinctive sense that what is all around me will continue long after I have lived this life. At some instinctive level which is quite difficult to explain/define/express, knowing I am a small part in the grand scheme of things makes sense; and goes far beyond me being a byproduct of my parents mating and producing offspring. I believe there is a purpose for everything on this planet even though much is incomprehensible for my level of understanding.

Even when I look at the theory of evolution of all life forms on this planet, yes much of that theory makes sense yet I still am left to wonder - who or why were specific life forms had survived to become what they are now. A good example is the mass extinction of approx 80% of the dinosaurs several million years ago yet the ones which remained evolved into modern day birds, alligators, turtles, to name a few. Another example is the evolution of modern man going from Cro Magnons, Neanderthals, Homo sapiens, Homo erectus, Homo habilis.  (apologies if not in correct order) The big question is, why in that specific order and not in another? I know if I try to make sense of all this and even if I try to make sense and attempt to define if god actually exists, I will drive myself insane in the process. man being who he is, we all need something which makes sense to us as individuals and give us a sense of relation to this reality which we exist in.

In response to Wolf to Bear, I too, think there is a higher power. Although, my beliefs run a bit differently; that there is a higher power but not just one. Several. To me, multiple deities makes more sense than there being just one. A God and a Goddess. Angels. I just know that I turn to this higher power(s) when I really need help from the cosmos. Some would call it putting energy into something I want/need. Some would call it praying. ToMAYto, ToMAHto. Same difference.
Besides, Someone or Something has to be given credit for all the beauty of nature. Forests, mountain ranges, animals. Doncha think?

And is that same "Someone or Something"  what we should blame for hurricanes, malaria, cancer, earthquakes, and every other manner of disease and natural disaster?

Unfortunately yes. When you take into fact that nature abhors a vacuum, thus each and everything has a it's opposite to maintain a balance. This applies to our concept of good and evil, applies to health/disease, light/darkness, wet/dry, etc.

stella41b -> RE: Is there a God? Best reasons to back it up (3/11/2010 1:46:14 PM)

I believe in the concept of God in my own interpretation of Theravada Buddhism (among others) in that everything is cyclical and revolves around some sort of nucleus.

I feel I have come across enough evidence in my life to know that there is the physical and material, and also that there is the metaphysical and spiritual, but also I believe that anything and everything you can think of - the Universe, people, life, etc - involves some sort of nucleus and cycles or something of a cyclical nature. This nucleus in whatever form it takes is basically my concept of God, but I don't believe in an entity or being or form known as God, it's purely abstract for me.

I make a clear distinction between belief and knowledge - you can be sure of the former but the latter comes for me when something lies beyond all reasonable doubt. However both are greatly influenced by experience, perception and awareness which is developed through the seemingly linear phenomenon of life.

However I'm not making an effort here to convince anyone of anything - please take from this whatever you wish - as I feel that everyone believes something, whether or not they believe in God, and in the absence of knowledge their beliefs, no matter how contrary or strange they are to mine, are just as valid.

FR

Couple of websites for the believers:

God is imaginary <-- watch the videos, they're listed in the sidebar on the right.

More food for thought on questioning at least the belief in the white male judeo christian god.

My 7-yr. old daughter says that everything in the world is either made by God or China. I think she is profound.

Questions for Christians

sunshinemiss -> RE: Is there a God? Best reasons to back it up (3/13/2010 5:28:48 AM)

Why isn't this in the religion section?

Well, I think the amount of time that some people spend trying to convince others that there is no god is pretty stupid, so maybe that's why. Seriously, why do they care so much?

Why do christians care so much about convincing EVERYBODY that their way is the ONLY way and that if you don't "get saved" you're going to hell?

Wolf2Bear -> RE: Is there a God? Best reasons to back it up (3/13/2010 7:50:18 AM)

Blame each other, blame yourselves
God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone

Show me all the thread on these forums pushing religion in your face? I see a lot of athiests starting threads calling anyone religions ignorant, but I don't see the ones you are talking about. Personally the people I hang out with, who are christians, go about their lives and could really give a rat's ass what you believe.

But the ones who do try to convince everybody, do it because they honestly believe that going to hell is bad, and the person they are trying to convince is going to suffer because they don't believe.

Now, the athiest believe that nothing happens to you when you die, so why do they care what someone elses belief system is? What are they trying to save others from?

Actually, I've LITERALLY been accosted walking from class to class by xtians trying to convert me. I DON'T fucking appreciate it! Having them throw their pamphlets in my face with their arrogant, holier than thou attitudes; threatening me with hell for not converting. It totally pisses me off! I mean, even you, here right now, are convinced that I'm going to hell all because I'm NOT a xtian. What audacity!

I have no clue what is going to happen to you when you die, and I truly don't care. I have to wonder if putting words in other people mouths is a habit with you and part of your problem.

I'm not sure where you go to school, but I don't see that shit happening on the campuses around here. Maybe it's something your doing or saying that is attracting this? Or maybe it the case of the above highlight, you are actually just assuming you know what your talking about.

It this is actually happening, then you need to speak to someone at your school and get it stopped. But my guess is, someone handed you a pamphlet one day and you made the rest up in your head.

You're saying this like hell is a real place and someone might actually end up there, that's where I got this idea.

I live in Texas and they've been known to stand in groups on corners for the specific purpose of "saving souls". They actually stand in front of you and block your path as you try to walk from one place to another. They do it to everyone that has to pass through there. NOT COOL!

It was dealt with, but we still get people that come out and preach against homosexuality and abortion and that guy doesn't even go to our school. Honestly, if he's so dead set against gay people, then why doesn't he go over to Oak Lawn, where the main population of the gay community actually reside, rather than coming to our school to spew his vitriole!

These are NOT isolated incidents where I live. It happens frequently. It DOES need to stop.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Is there a God? Best reasons to back it up (3/13/2010 10:00:22 AM)

My religious exposure was vast and I have all the proof of God I need because he made women ...

that can do this:

If that ain't proof of divine forces at work, I don't know what is!

DarlingSavage -> RE: Is there a God? Best reasons to back it up (3/13/2010 10:10:38 AM)

Christianity is NOT the only religion. There are TONS of them, best to choose one that isn't quite so intolerant of other cultures and belief systems.
