WASHINGTON --- Hillary Rodham Clinton's State Department is spending $5.4 million to buy fine crystal stemware for American embassies -- but it won't give the US economy much of a boost.

The contract was given to a tiny Washington, DC, interior designer, which in turn subcontracted the crystal work to a Swedish firm -- snubbing such US companies as the famous manufacturer in Clinton's own back yard, Steuben Crystal of upstate Corning.

The firm didn't even get a chance to bid on the contract, which will outfit embassies and ambassadors' residences with fancy crystal for ritzy functions.

Ironically, under the no-bid contract, some of the crystal is to be custom-crafted to include the seal of the United States, although Swedes will do all of the manufacturing.

Contracting rules require any American firms that subcontract work to use a domestic firm or get a waiver.

The firm that got the contract, Systems Design Inc., is a small interior-design firm in tony Georgetown. The company, which is eligible for minority small-business contracts, does not appear to have done any similar work.

After getting the contract in September, the firm subcontracted to Swedish glassmaker Orrefors/Kosta Boda USA.

Department spokesman Darby Holladay said Systems Design couldn't find a domestic producer who could meet the 100 percent lead-free requirement, although a Steuben spokesman said it does manufacture lead-free crystal.

This is the article in the N.Y. Post.
What the hell is wrong with this woman? We're in a severe reccession with millions of people out of work and she wants to spend $5.4 million of our money on new chrystal for embasseys? Let those swells use whatever they have like the rest of us!
I'm sure this will give all the people living under bridges because they can't find work a warm fuzzy feeling!
And, she awards the "contract" to a small firm that noone's heard about and *they'll* just order it from a foreign country, Sweden!
And the people in Washington wonder why people out here are so pissed off?
Well, I'll be calling *my* congressman's and senator's offices tommorow!
Is she that out of touch?

Symbolism, Popeye.  We need to be able to impress the foolish natives, and I think protocol requires good stemware, even when the toast is "screw you and here's to me."  Even if we went as isolationist as I think you'd like to see us go, we will still have embassies, if only to bail out our citizens who go adventuring and have a little too much fun.  We're going to host the Emperor of Whothefuckcares, and drink to his health from red plastic tumblers?

Taking the order out of the country, though???  A head needs to roll, and that deal needs to be cancelled.

Never trust the Post to be absolutely correct on details so I'll withhold judgement but on the surface this does look like a domestice crystal manufacturere could have been used.

A no bid contract?

...hoard GOLD!

LadyEllen -> RE: Hillary Clinton wants new chrystal for embasseys! (3/16/2010 5:10:03 AM)

What I dont understand is why they didnt find a third world country manufacturer to subcontract to; so boosting the margin on the deal as just reward for passing on the specification. Sweden is a very expensive place after all - those Swedes want health and safety equipment, a decent wage and healthcare, whilst Chinese or Indians are far less demanding.

I'm with you on this "small" detail Popeye.

I understand the desire for the social elites to think they have to out-do the Jones, but it would be nice if the spend happy officials of Washington would do more than pay political lip service to this recession.

LadyEllen -> RE: Hillary Clinton wants new chrystal for embasseys! (3/16/2010 5:26:03 AM)

Ah - but this is an example, is it not, of the super rich providing jobs? The super rich US government inc in this instance is spending $5.4 million in the US. Yet the bulk of that spend goes overseas, with only a few US jobs provided/supported and a handsome margin derived for the US contractor who outsourced the manufacture.

Riiiiiiiiiiight... like Clinton doesn't have other things to deal with than buying wine glasses. She's only got Israel, Afghanistan, Iraq and China on her plate after all. It's not surprising she should be shopping for table ware at Macy's in her spare time [8|] . Fucking hell, get a grip.

Whoever made that decision was wrong, but to think Clinton would have made such a mistake (had she been in charge of buying stupid wine glasses, when she's, oh, you know, nothing more than the Secretary of State) is beyond cretinous. Very New York Post; very popeye.

Maybe she should use the china she stole from the white house when Bill's term ended. They had to return the furniture, but I'm not sure if we got all of the stemware back.

You're just jealous because you have to eat out of styrofoam plates. You're such a prole :-) .

Hi kittin,

I'm curious, have you ever noticed that conservatives hold opposition leaders intently accountable for the actions of their subordinates as do the liberals in reference to conservative leadership. Yet both sides tend to provide ample excuse for their sides errant misgivings.

Maybe we need to put up more mirrors within the American political process.

A nation divided and all that.

Are you sure you're not Irish, you seem to be a hot tempered little wench?

You wouldn't like my solution any better than the current status quo.

I suspect that to be true.

I tried to confirm this story with another primary source and didn't find one, just the NY Post article and thousands of blogs referring back to the same original article. Either there was only one news organization who deemed this story newsworthy or the NY Post just flat-out made this up.

But let's also keep it in perspective. The US is spending $640 million per day to buy imported oil and another $900 million per day to support the war(s) securing control of that oil, so a one-time purchase of $5.4 million is (relatively speaking) not that big a deal.

thornhappy -> RE: Hillary Clinton wants new chrystal for embasseys! (3/16/2010 8:19:05 PM)

Guess what, that's a myth.

Say, do you guys really think that she's personally overseeing this purchase?  Don'cha think that work would be down the chain somewhere?

I'm imagining a world where politicians have become obsolete... a relic of the past... and I have a big smile on my face... [:D]
