Brain -> Insurer Targeted HIV Patients to Drop Coverage - ABC News (3/18/2010 5:08:53 PM)

The thought of an insurance company dropping anyone with a life threatening disease is cold hearted.

Health care for profit is murder when people are denied care they need so insurers will not have to pay for the care.

Clink, clink, clink,
That was the sound of the thirty pieces of silver Jesus Christ was betrayed for.

Clink, clink, clink,
That's the sound of the money people are being betrayed for today; people die so they profit.

Insurer Targeted HIV Patients to Drop Coverage - ABC News

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In May, 2002, Jerome Mitchell, a 17-year old college freshman from rural South Carolina, learned he had contracted HIV. The news, of course, was devastating, but Mitchell believed that he had one thing going for him: On his own initiative, in anticipation of his first year in college, he had purchased his own health insurance.

Shortly after his diagnosis, however, his insurance company, Fortis, revoked his policy. Mitchell was told that without further treatment his HIV would become full-blown AIDS within a year or two and he would most likely die within two years after that.

So he hired an attorney -- not because he wanted to sue anyone; on the contrary, the shy African-American teenager expected his insurance was canceled by mistake and would be reinstated once he set the company straight.

But Fortis, now known as Assurant Health, ignored his attorney's letters, as they had earlier inquiries from a case worker at a local clinic who was helping him. So Mitchell sued.

In 2004, a jury in Florence County, South Carolina, ordered Assurant Health, part of Assurant Inc, to pay Mitchell $15 million for wrongly revoking his heath insurance policy.

In September 2009, the South Carolina Supreme Court upheld the lower court's verdict, although the court reduced the amount to be paid him to $10 million.

By winning the verdict against Fortis, Mitchell not only obtained a measure of justice for himself; he also helped expose wrongdoing on the part of Fortis that could have repercussions for the entire health insurance industry.

But don't health care insurance companies have the right to make a profit?

(just thought I would give you a taste of what is sure to follow)

We exist in a Capitalistic structure.

Most insurance companies are corporations.

Corporations are obligated to maximize profit for the benefit of its shareholders.

I say if you don't like seeing things like this, help change the structure. Hoping that corporations will play the capitalistic game "nicer" is futile.

What do you say, Brain?

And the system worked the way it should, so thanks for confirming that Brain.

Don't get me wrong, I think what Fortis did is unconscionable. But for every one Mitchell who fights the battle all the way through, how many others take it up the ass?

popeye1250 -> RE: Insurer Targeted HIV Patients to Drop Coverage - ABC News (3/18/2010 5:44:28 PM)

And the govt wants to start letting in HIV pos people from foreign countries. Now who do you think will be getting "coverage" when that happens?
All they have to do is declare them "refugees" and they'll get coverage and Americans won't.

Very few, and there will be fewer after a $10 million reward. Fortis still needed a plausible basis to rescind the policy, and they came up with one that turned out to be false (the date of the HIV test). Those circumstances rarely exist, they just make the papers when they do.

I see.

So then we can conclude that corporations will seek to maximize profit regardless of the pain, suffering, and death of their customers and this is something we should promote.

Bullshit.

Insurance companies play this game constantly.

Ask any doctor how many times initial claims get turned down and how much time they have to spend providing documentation for their patients to receive the coverage they have paid for.

What you may not know brain is that this health care bill is more of a fascist/corportist policy than anything else. They're not going to get rid of "all health care companies" instead they're going to set-up GSE (Government subsidized enterprises) where the IRS will choose which health care company will be allowed to be in the system. This type of decision making will breed corruption to the highest level. For instance, you may have health care companies that might make back door deals where they will purposely drop certain people knowing those people will report that to the news. And of course, the media will embrace the incident as a story because they are as corrupt and bought out like most politicians are. Then all your favorite politicians (Obama and Nancy Pelosi), will give this health care company or CEO or sister companies a guaranteed spot in the new health care system. While these back door deals are happening, your reading this very article preaching about "socialism" and why our current health care system is a fraud; you sit there in your little chair and talk about how Obama care will give us improved health care.

Yes, after a $10 million award is plastered all over the headlines, more seem likely to fight the battle. What attorney wouldn't take these cases, 'eh?

Of course, we don't know what will happen at the Appellate level, and if there's still an award, how much will be left over after the attorney's take. Or if the poor kid will have died by then.

I still say the system sucks.

Health care should be a basic human right, and not subject to all these games of greed.

Mike, why do you keep saying I'm "afraid" of things? Is wanting my govt. to do it's fucking job being "afraid?"
I'm probably on the other side of the spectrum, "pissed-off!"
Our govt. seems to have no lack of pity for foreign nationals but when it comes to American Citizens we seem to be a bother to them!
Now, that is my answer to your question. Whether you *like* it or not is entirely up to you.

There's a difference from a company choosing not to initiate coverage because of a pre-existing condition and refusing coverage after a condition shows up. When a company, who has already been paid the premiums it demands for health care decides to drop a client because they actually need the product they pre-paid for...it's bullshit. He paid for health insurance in case anything happened to him. Something happened...that's the whole point in having health insurance. Just cuz it's a big something doesn't mean shit.

This story made me a little sick. It's why we need health care reform...and not this bullshit being put on the table by the government right now. Single-payer, public option, subsidized and regulated (meaning no more of this lobbying, wallet raping, insurance anti-trust law exceptions!) health care for all God-damnit!

And the current legislation does NOT need to be passed. It's bullshit and government cop out from not getting their pretty little pockets padded by those scum bag lobbyists.

boi
