The "home grown" stuff is not as safe as people want to think, though.
Local growers sometimes use cow manure as fertilizer. If the fertilizer contains e-coli, so does the produce.

Status: offline 		When I was a long haul truck driver I tried to eat most of my food fresh.  I had a 12-volt cooler in my truck.  The only places around the country that provided truck parking while grocery shopping tended to be Wal-Marts.  It wasn't the best food, but it was better than what I could get in the truckstops.  Lots of the truckstops have converted their restaurants to fast food chains & the ones that have restaurants still don't tend to offer many healthy choices.  So I was grateful for the Wal-Marts.  Now that I only need to park a car, I love going to Whole Foods & Trader Joe's.  They're more expensive, but I am fortunate that most of my food is provided by my employer, so I only need to buy when I want something special or non-kosher.  Wal-Mart may not be a popular store with a lot of people, but sometimes one has no other choices.

Status: offline 		I like my food organic and ethically-sourced. I don't eat much meat because I don't want to support factory farming and the natural free-range stuff is expensive, and I eat organic produce because 'genetically modified food' isn't really something I want to put in my body. Sure I spend more time reading labels on packaged foods, but I'm also not supporting Monsanto every time I make a stir-fry. I try to eat mostly what's in season too, but I'm not sure if I could give up the luxury of fresh strawberries in winter :)
I get what I can at local markets and the rest at King Soopers (Kroger) and Whole Foods. I'm lucky enough to be in a city where there are a couple decent options for eating out too (City'o'City and Watercourse Foods both flaunt natural vegetarian/vegan fare).

I prefer Trader Joe's myself, as they are more reasonably priced than Whole Foods. I don't buy much meat anymore, for the very same reasons that s2p mentioned. Most foods I eat are whole and organic.

This year I plan to start buying from local farmer's markets, and I'll also look into the advantages of a CSA.

Status: offline 		Thing that bugs me about Trader Jose's is every single green bean is individually wrapped. I can't just go and grab a handful of green beans. No, I have to buy all that goddamned packaging.

Good breads, though, really well-priced. Especially those little "Pretzel Rolls". Yummy. I need to go tomorrow and stock up on breads. Sammich weather.

Wow. TY for the link, Julia. I go to Whole Paycheck for a few items that I can't get anywhere else that is close to me, such as Parmesan rinds ($5.99/lb vs. 16.99 for the cheese itself), chile-garlic paste, Himalayan sea salt, to name 3 examples, but I find that they are just too expensive for most things. Why should I pay 6 bucks a pound for chix breasts there when I can buy Kosher for 2 bucks a pound less at Kroger? Or 4 bucks for a loaf of good bread when I can get similar at Trader Joe's for $2.79?

I'm thinking I can do without their overpriced fare.
