sir032010 -> New-bee Question About Munch: (3/20/2010 6:55:39 AM)

I couldn't find a thread that explains just what a "munch" is, though I think I have something of an idea.  Could someone with more experience explain munches to me, give me an idea about how to find one, and explain any etiquette for them I might not know from the outset.

A munch is generally a gathering at a local eatery. People generally wear street clothes while attending. Topics vary dependant upon the group, sometimes, kink and D/s aren't even discussed. Essentially, it's a bunch of like-minded folks, getting together, and socializing while eating or drinking coffee.

I never seem to have the link handy, but Caryls Page (drkdysire.com?), lists many events, including munches, located worldwide. You can also google BDSM Munch + your location, to find some events near you.

Edited to include: You asked about etiquette, and I neglected to cover that area. It is appropriate for you to contact the person who hosts the munch and ask if there are any specific dress codes, forms of etiquette that their group prefers/requires (some munches do occur in clubs, but not any that I've encountered). Additionally, you can request that they introduce you to the other members of that munch. Many hosts/hostesses will be happy to oblige.

A munch is usually a gathering of like minded people (in this case bdsm) to have lunch together and share stories, advice, and to meet potential friends or play partners. I am used to hosting femdom parties so I don't go to munches as much any more but they can be fun. It's not required to dress in bdsm clothes when attending. Think coffee shop, not dungeon.

Hope this helps.

Most local BDSM groups have a presence on FetLife now - go to www.Fetlife.com to see more. It's basically a BDSM Facebook. You can search by your area and find clubs - most have pages where they post information about upcoming munches, etc., and you can learn more about the people you might meet as well. [:)]

It's usually a bunch of oinkers who think they're kinky eating as a group at a low-end restaurant.

As others have mentioned, there's typically not a lot of etiquette rules for munches. But if you're ever looking for information on etiquette for other scene events, here's a good link: http://www.iron-rose.com/IR/docs/etiq.htm

And many groups do have a set of rules or code of conduct when attending a munch. The group which I belong to, we have 5 basic rules we require new and old members alike to abide by. Because it is always held it a public venue, we insist that no fetish wear be worn (just regular street clothes) and we insist that any type of heavy role playing be left being private events. We simply tailor our activities and social dynamics that is appropriate to our environment.
