If the junk in my house reflects me, tools everywhere, bits of motorbike in various stages of restoration, books on all sorts of subjects and half finished silverwork, I guess that is kind of right, it reflects my interests, but about tv, though we may glean what we can about the subject as it is portrayed, tv in itself can create culltures of it's own design.

I say this, because of what I understand of the daily diet of soap tv, it comes very close to the mark in some ways, but is totally unrealistic in other ways, those that need to absorb soap culture on a regular basis may even take on the soap view of reality.

On the other hand, the popular soap Eastenders, it amazed me the attitude of the people portrayed, they seemed from the soap to be very disagreeable people, people I would not wish to meet, but I have since met real east enders and they are nothing like what this soap portrays and I would go as far as to say, the popular soap Eastenders does the true  east enders a disservice in it's portrayal of them, but then, I might have met exceptional people, but I still can't believe people live like that, if they do, and it is indicative of a Briton from the east end of London, I would not blame a foreign viewer, if they viewed and  chose to steer clear.

I ask this question because of reading on other threads, I have become aware some people still believe we live in a system controlled wholy by the monarchy, and other instances where if there is a British inspired thread running it is largely run by the British on these forums with little contribution from Americans, is it you don't know, or is it you don't care ? The reverse is different when an American inspired, domestic America thread is running, Britons will comment, will get involved, will contribute, why is there a difference ?

Americans tend to be self-absorbed, and not have much interest in anything outside of America. We're just an ignorant, xenophobic people in comparison to you Brits, and I don't think television has to do with it. Personally, I hate broadcast television (comedies, dramas, etc.) from any country, and rarely watch it. I don't think anything I know about the UK was learned from watching television, other than the fact that you seem to have a lot of unexploded Scotsmen laying about your streets for some inexplicable reason.

I'm curious... does British TV also have 20 minutes of commericals for every 40 minutes of programs? I can't imagine the British putting up with such nonsense.

Not currently it doesn't, I can't be bothered with the ammount there IS, I stopped bothering with TV even with what t
they have.

Here in the States I'd go fucking insane if I had to put up with the commercial overload on TV, thankfully GT isn't a telly addict.

America claims to show sports on TV ... that's total bollox coz the game has to keep getting stopped for reminders to sue some fucker whilst drinking piss ... err ... "beer" and financing a car to dine out in on cut price burgers.

Yes... I do think I am missing something.  Like what on earth our home has to do with whether television accurately portrays Americans, our life, and our culture...

Your television shows are often stuffy.
That said I love many of your television shows...they are often played on our local PBS stations.

Butch, you are only getting the stuffy stuff. There is nothing stuffy about the shows on the list I put up earlier.

In fact, they make fun of their own stuffiness. Example: Little Britain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8orUaCJ0GY

Thinking that the American shows really show anything about what Americans are like is a mistake.

Surely programmes made by people for the same people would somehow represent those people? Are you saying JR Ewing is based on some Chinese Buddhist bloke?.......Surely there has to be something approaching reality in these programmes - otherwise why would people watch them?

Arrested Development is by far the best American comedy I've seen and the best stand up we have over here at the moment is American - Rich Hall. When they get the films right they get them really right - but most of them are useless. It wouldn't be accurate to say our screens our full of US shows - it's not the case - but we do get a lot of US drama and they seem to do that quite well if you like that sort of thing.

In terms of do I believe Americans are like Dallas? I hope so - the world needs people like Digger Barnes and JR Ewing.

No, I'm saying that JR Ewing is based on fantasy, not reality. I never really watched Dallas, but do you honestly think that people go around shooting each other and then just getting over it?

Television shows are meant to entertain, not be based in any kind of reality. While I didn't watch "Dallas," I did watch "Knots Landing," and believe me in reality, people aren't getting chummy with the woman their husband had an affair with.

I'm sure you have heard of "Sex and the City." Yes, Carrie had a small apartment, and it was originally rent controlled, but in reality, that little apartment would have been much smaller. Charlotte, before she married Trey would not have been living in the lovely apartment she was in the city on the salary of manager of a gallery. Her original apartment would have cost her about 3 grand a month.

Same with most of the other shows. People who are "poor" in those shows still seem to be able to do a lot of things that poor people just aren't doing. Think of all the intimate relationships we see on television shows? How often do things work that way in real life?

The point is don't confuse entertainment for how people really are.

You're kidding, right?

American tv does not accurately portray American life.    If it did, no one would watch.  How boring.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Day_at_a_Time  this show is an example.  It was a reflection of single moms. So what he suggests has some valid points to it.

While that was a good show, it didn't accurately portray single moms.

You aren't missing anything. Fictional television shows are entertainment. They aren't representative of what we are really like. The legal shows MAY represent current issues but how they are handled is complete fiction.

The family dramas have very dysfunctional families, but at the end of every episode, everyone has communicated and resolved some problems.

The comedies would have everyone believing that we are quite a funny group, laughing and making jokes about everything that happens.

Add to that how everyone is pencil thin and beautiful with terrific jobs? I only WISH that real life was similar to television.

Surely you're joking?

It would seem to me that you're like us in the sense that you have liberal and conservative strands runing through your country. So on one hand you had states that led the world in accepting homosexuality; on the other hand you had states that were insitutionally racist and people in those states who were unforgiving in their treatment of non whites.

You're not the first to display anti-social tendancies toward 'outsiders' and certainly will not be the last.

Ahh yes....the international boundaries of humour.

There's a difference then as television programmes here operate under the general principle that television should entertain and inform. British television is rooted in some form of reality - otherwise we wouldn't watch it - most of our programmes are gritty and understated - a reflection of the nation. I get the impression that US TV likes to show upwardly mobile/affluent/good looking/happy people - and in that sense it is basd in reality as it's part of the American dream. Our TV shows like to tell it how it is - and we have no English 'dream' - in fact we have no English 'try your best and hope for the best'....just an English 'more disappointment'.

Yes I've heard of it....but can't think of anything worse than watching four lasses drinking wine and talking utter shite about boyfriends etc. Given the choice I'd rather study the patterns on my plates in the washing up bowl for hours and hours.

Probably it's an unfair comparison because largely what the UK does domestically doesn't affect the rest of the world, the US on the other hand is larger and so even its domestic policies filter down the rest of us eventually. Especially in domestic aspects such as their 'war' on terror.

"Have we won the war on terror yet?"
"No we are still afraid of spiders and buttons!"

"The Kids in the Hall" was a staple of my undergrad existence. Chicken Lady , possibly the most creepily inappropriate creation in the history of telly .

...we are known by the company we keep.

and TV goes round on $.   so this is what we pay to see.   being that we pay to see this stuff- means we enter it as a treasure of our culture.

no matter how you argue it Americans pay to see the crap that is American TV.   So if it was not "us" then no one would pay for it.  No one.
