I just watched Lumet's film adaptation of Twelve Angry men with Henry Fonda. Superb film, entieely dialogue driven yet it grabs and holds one's attention to the very end. They just don't make movies like that anymore, everything seems to be driven by special effects or gratuitous action scenes. What about it, what old movies do you think they should emulate these days?

The Ten Commandments- which should be coming up with easter upon us. I've watched it every year during the easter season for as long as I remember and it never gets old for me.

Arpig, I agree, it's a terrific film, but I have to say, in general, movies today are better.

I typically have great difficulty maintaining enough interest to watch reruns. However, Casablanca and Treasure of the Sierra Madre immediately come to mind as two rare exceptions. Yes, I admit that I'm an old Bogie fan, so this is all subjective.

Off the top of my head and I know I am forgetting many: - Breakfast at Tiffany's - Dr. Strangelove - The Pink Panther - The Big Sleep - Cabaret - Casablanca - Sunset Boulevard - Vertigo - Mildred Pierce - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - Der Blaue Engel - Faust - Otto e Mezzo - La Dolce Vita - Belle de Jour - La Grande Vadrouille But I don't share your opinion that there aren't great films currently being made. Last one that really grabbed me was Inglorious Basterds. Did you catch it per chance? - LA

I just happen to really enjoy dialogue driven films and they seem pretty much out of favour these days, I didn't mean to imply that no good movies are made anymore.

Wentz was great; I love the opening, with him in the farm house. And yes, Hepburn was divine.

There are many though. I love old comedy, especially Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy. Oddly enough for your premise, Jackie Chan has stated that his style is modeled on Buster Keaton.

I've never cared much for Laurel and Hardy, but I probably have about 15 Buster Keaton films on DVD, and everything Harold Lloyd ever did. If you're not aware of it, you should keep an eye on TCM - especially late Sunday night. They run a lot of those old films, and I've burned dozens of silent films from their "Silent Sunday Night" series.

And I tend to hate films that over play it. looking to jerk tears. I would not weep at Sleepless in Seattle as I'm not fond of the cast at all. I haven't even seen it. Actually, Breakast at Tiffany's might be the only film that comes to mind. But the more I think there is more to it, which might be too personal to discuss on these boards. - LA

Agree wholeheartedly with Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Father Goose (god, it's been years since I watched that) and the slapstick silents. Classics, all... Hollywood has forgotten how to tell a story. I hate that spectacle and CGI has replaced character and plot. Recent films I'd recommend as harking back to the good old days - Antichrist, Hard Candy, Blair Witch Project, Scenes of a Sexual Nature, Exotica, Pulp Fiction. I'm sure there's more, but those are the ones which struck me as concentrating more on story and character than big explosions and gore porn.

Just a bump to let everyone know that TCM is running a couple of Buster Keaton silents tonight, and at least one more next Sunday night. Anyone who's never seen him, this would be a good chance to gain a little exposure.
