If there's a way to turn off that useless god damned scroller at the top of the forum pages? I'm starting to think "Waiting for scroller.collarchat.com" is the real name of this website.

Once upon a time, the site would stall waiting for avatars. I think they got a few complaints (I know they got a suggested fix from me!) and then started downloading text before avatar. Now they should do text before avatar before scroller.

I gots no other answers.

I'm not sure what that means, but I'm open to any idea. I don't browse the forums anywhere near as often as I used to, but still, it's annoying when almost every page I click on makes me wait 20, even 30 seconds for that damned scroller to load before I can read the only thing on the page that really matters - the text.

I've never had the message or the problem. If the page is slow in loading, the problem is more likely the speed of your internet connection or your computer.

Well, if "the only thing on the page that really matters" is truly the text, you could always just use lynx. :)

What follows is just a quick thought, but a more pragmatic approach you might try is disabling JavaScript. I think that should "turn off" the scroller, but it will also kill your ability to post conveniently. Still, if this is really a problem for you with your connection – and assuming you browse significantly more than you post – it might be worth trying. You can always re-enable JavaScript to post or, perhaps better, run a separate browser with JavaScript disabled when reading the forums and keep your main browser for posting. Actually, simply trying a different browser might also be worthwhile; it's possible something else will start rendering what it can from the page rather than hanging the entire process due to the slow loading script resource like your current browser seems to be doing.

Just the opposite of shallowdeep, I suggest you try updating your Java applet. Download and install the latest version.

A couple other possibilities...are you connecting on dial up? Do you have an older processor? Do you have adequate memory in your pc? What video card do you have? Download and install the latest drivers for your video card.

That actually wouldn't do anything. Despite the confusingly similar names, JavaScript and Java are entirely separate entities - and the scroller uses the former, not the latter. Unlike Java, JavaScript engines are integral with the browser; they aren't something you can update independently. Still, a new browser might well be worth trying – although, assuming the problem is a slow connection, any advantage in this case would probably come more from a different rendering policy than a faster JavaScript engine.

It's not a slow computer problem; the desktop is a 1.2 gig machine with 2 gigs of RAM and the laptop has 3 gigs. It's not a slow connection; I have DSL. Both machines run the latest version of Firefox.

Every other application and website runs and loads fine on both computers; the only website I have trouble with is this one, and it always hangs on "connecting scroller.collarchat.com" or "waiting for scroller.collarchat.com." The problem's not on my end. It's the scroller. I appreciate the suggestions, but I'm not inclined to make any configuration changes or use a different browser to connect with a site that I don't spend much time on anymore. I guess I'll just have to live with it when I come here.

Interesting. I don't think the load times you are seeing are at all typical. Are you using any Firefox extensions? I just tested with Firefox 3.6 in a few different OSes and the time to render text was more like 1-3 seconds. There is a bit of latency on a scrollerbridge.php resource served from scroller.collarchat.com, but it's not anywhere close to 10 seconds and, more importantly, doesn't seem to be stopping the text from rendering. You really might want to at least test another browser to determine whether or not it's truly a network issue beyond your control before resigning yourself to such horrific load times... unless you're trying to prove what a masochist you are, I suppose. :)

That's pretty bold of you to say that the problem isn't on your end, when apparently you are just about the only one with the problem. That kind of screams problem on your end.

Regardless of that, along with everything everyone has suggested, it could also be your firewall, your anti-virus, anti-malware software as well.

Bottom line though is it is a problem on YOUR end. If it wasn't, everyone would be suffering the same aggravation and well...that just isn't the case.
