Extraordinary. Or maybe not.

After the furore, and now criminal prosecutions in the Parliamentary expenses scandal, after the furore of "cash for questions" and alike for "peerages for sale", it seems its still not getting through to some that this sort of thing isnt something we want from our MPs.

£3000-00 to £5000-00 per day sounds pretty cheap mind you, to get those pesky regulations rolled back and a few lucrative amendments slipped in here and there.

Taxi for Byers..........

Nice to see The Sunday Times invited plenty of conservative MP's to its bogus meeting. So ten out of twenty turned up and how many turned out to be Labour? Would be interesting to know if each party was invited in equal measure but it turns out that either Labour MP's are more enticed by the prospect of extra cash or the conservatives weren't invited in equal measure because The Sunday Times it a faction of Murdoch inc.

People should be asking if these stings are designed to coincide with the time just before an election and if News International is trying to colour the election beyond just writing negative stories against Labour. They have free reign not only to report news as they like but to also create it, I don't fall for such news items.

I see the story behind the story.

No doubt about the partisan nature of the newspaper and it could well be a ploy to show Labour MPs up - but if they had not played ball, there'd be no story.

The more important point for me is that these people still dont get it. If they did they should have declined the invite from what appeared to be an American company wishing to influence UK government, knowing full well the situation after expenses.

The programme is on tonight at 8pm on Channel 4 if anyone (Brits only I believe, I dont think you can get it overseas for some reason) wants to see it.

The scandal is the fruit of a Channel 4 Dispatches exercise as it turns out, not the Murdoch press; indeed the programme features some Tories too, anxious to do the bidding of a US corporation.

Meanwhile Byers is about to be castrated at the Parliamentary Labour meeting coming up this week.

Moonhead -> RE: you thought expenses was the end of it? (3/22/2010 12:38:18 PM)

To be fair to NI, they were pretty firmly behind Blair when he made it completely clear that he was precisely the same sort of autocratic monetarist control freak as Thatcher. Murdoch's current disdain for Labour is more likely down to a conviction that Cameron has already won the next election and Brown is determined to take his party down with him, as much as anything else. I certainly haven't see any sign of Labour moving to the left under Brown.

Politesub53 -> RE: you thought expenses was the end of it? (3/22/2010 4:54:07 PM)

Are you sure Moonhead ? Surely Brown rekindling links with Charlie Wheelan is a lurch to the left. I know it isnt as far left as you would like but its moving left of centre all the same. I suspect the left will start to fill places on the next shadow cabinet, as the Blairites will surely get kicked out.

As for Dispatches, It seems a few faces have already been dispatched. You can bet Brown wouldnt have moved on this issue but for the forthcoming election.

How many more do you think are doing the same things?

There will be more found out, although it is a massive task, I can see legislation that has been passed being examined on who pushed for the change, and who exactly is benefiting from the change. If  Byers says he normally charges between 3000 and 5000 a day, is he actually saying he has already done a few jobs to arrive at those figures.

Taxi for hire, maybe after all this, he might have to get a job as a taxi driver.

Sleazy scum bags, all of them.

They are employed as members of the government, that should be their only job, that is, no jobs on the side, as any job done on the side, is normally a job on the quiet, cash in hand and all that.

And the show goes on, just like here.

Aneirin -> RE: you thought expenses was the end of it? (3/23/2010 2:39:32 AM)

And who are the fools in this, us, because we vote the fuckers into power based on yet more half truths and lies.

The law should be clear, abuse one's position and criminal charges should be brought, with a bite that is effective, not fines and such, they can be paid for and quickly forgotten about, loss of position and the same treatment the public receives when they commit acts of fraud should be the order of the day, prison if need be. Oh, can't do that they may say, the prisons are full up, fine then the politicians need to sort it out to get the ones who should not be in prison out, so they can always have places for themselves when they are caught doing something they shouldn't. They are good at providing themselves with possibilities of wealth and an easy life, they should also provide themselves with the correct conditions if they should fail in the duties and need correction, they should accept they also are liable to fail, just like the rest of us, there is no difference, they are not above the public in their position, to think they are, is arrogance we don't need, as one rule for the public and another for the politicians only ensures distrust and lack of confidence in elected government, chaos and anachy ensues.

Only if there is a system that has a bite will politicians opt to take their position seriously, as without, they are just laughing at us.

The latest news is the three labour MP's concerned, Hewitt, Hoon and Byers have been suspended pending investigation. It was noted with interest that these three were also instrumental in the last attempt to remove Gordon Brown from the position of the Labour Party leader. So, perhaps they did what they did, because they realised their government was failing and they were out to line their own nests as much as they could, before the public kicks them out of government on election day. For them to realise the possibility they were not coming back shows just how much faith and belief they have in their own party. Maybe it actually is those who are in the labour party and government are only there for position and wealth, their faith in their party left long ago when the possibility of personal profiteering became the overdriving interest.

On some level, most of them, all three main political parties. It strikes me that the higher up the tree, the greedier they get.

LadyEllen -> RE: you thought expenses was the end of it? (3/23/2010 5:25:24 AM)

I dont see any reason why MPs should not have outside interests - indeed in many ways this is a good thing as it keeps them more in touch with the world outside Westminster (though not with our world of course) and enables them to do their job better. I dont even have a problem with them receiving payment for providing advice to outside agencies as long as it is declared.

What I object to is the professing of ability and willingness to influence legislation on behalf of those outside agencies. This is treason, plain and simple, since the influence has as its methodology and aim the subversion of the state as enacted by the electorate. For Byers to proclaim that he succeeded in exercising such influence to the aims declared should mean his immediate arrest, and I do not for one moment believe his revised version that he was lying when he made those boasts - but in that case he needs arresting for fraudulent misrepresentation.

As for prison places for MPs - the Tower Of London is still one of HMs Prisons so that might be a good place for traitors today as it was in times past. The cost of their stay would be more than funded by the additional tourist visits produced by their incarceration.
