Fair enough. I do find the spectacle of Americans complaining about whatever incompetent they elected last not being shown enough respect a bit dismaying given some of what's been said on here about the Venezualan or French governments, though. I think that basically comes under "don't dish it out if you can't take it". That sort of double standard is never an attitude I've felt any respect for at all.

In the late 70's....how old are you again? Your profile says 37?

Ya know, how about we stop with the chimp talk as well. Bush may not be exactly what some of us wanted in a president, but he was president.

There's a certain irony in you saying that with what a large chunk of the board are calling the Kenyan, isn't there?

But it's ok because you did it first?

LOL

37 today would mean 7 years old when Reagan was sworn in. I think there's a bit of embellishment going on here, maybe he meant he agreed with conservative ideology from that time period?

I've not been insisting that he can't possibly be the President because he's not American or calling for his death, mate: credit me with a bit of class at least, will you?

Again this is nothing new. Remember all the OMGRECOUNT!!! in 2000 that quietly tapered off once the recount showed that Bush won Florida, followed by months of "The Supreme Court appointed President" even though he actually won by electoral vote?

Yeah. Seriously. Glass houses and all.

There's still some debate about that, though. For one thing the recount was called off due to the Brooks Brothers riot, iirc.
(Though I think it was the electoral college that insisted Bush had won, or as near won as makes no odds, rather than the supreme court.)

He was called "Supreme Court appointed" because the SC ruled to end the recount at a certain point before all votes were tallied. A month or so later, when all the votes had been counted, it was quietly reported that Bush had won Florida anyway, but by that time "Supreme Court appointed President" had gained momentum and the phrase was used all the way up to 9/11, when the nation was faced with something far more important to deal with.

Moonhead -> RE: Conservative Blogger Urges Obama Assassination on Twitter - DailyFinance (3/22/2010 9:45:19 AM)

All things considered, that was probably the best thing that could have happened to him. Small wonder some of the conspiracy nutcases think it was stagemanaged.

I agree, it was definitely a defining moment in an administration that seemed otherwise aimless, and I'd say it was one of the strongest factors in regards to his re-election (though John Kerry is a close second - talk about "no chance in hell" LOL) but I don't think it was a conspiracy.

Besides, if it was a conspiracy, it would have been pulled off at the end of his term, not at the start.

Nonsense.

To begin with, the Republicans who cry about states rights were all too happy for the Florida Supreme Court judgment to order a recount to be overridden by the U.S. Supreme Court when it benefited their candidate.

And it was never established that he had won Florida because the balloting discrepancies were never fully investigated.

Not to mention that he lost the popular vote to Gore and his election was based strictly on electoral votes.

Exactly. I've been saying in another thread that it's hilarious how both parties have one standard for themselves and another standard for the opposition, and the main reason I brought up the recount was to show that 8 years ago the same "he isn't really President" tactics were used. It's not limited to one or the other.

Which means he won the election. The election is decided by electoral votes. Always has been.

So many factual errors.  There is a thing called a safe harbor.  Which basically says that there has to be a start and an end, and there must be fixed remedy requests.

As a native of florida, I followed these recounts closely.  Gore's request for remedy involved cherry picking a number of counties where he thought he could pick up the most votes, as they were historically democratic.

He specifically decided on not recounting the entire state, as he thought bush would pick up more absentee and military votes.

So he made a specific request within the alloted time frame.  When that failed.. he went to the florida supreme court to extend the period unlawfully, allowing him to reframe his request.

Being 12 democrats, they agreed.  It went to the supreme court who in the initial ruling said.. we can't believe you're saying this.  Try again.  When FLSC continued, the surpreme court overruled them.

While this is correct, before that was known, the Supreme Court DID appoint the president--just that it turned out to be unnecessary (or an act of impatience).

What bothers me about that case is not the Bush victory, but that the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case at all. And that interference in a state election to stop a recount certainly carries the appearance of political intervention.

Now, had they insisted on recounting the entire state, I could see some even handedness.

As it stands, though, it certainly carries the appearance of politically convenient choices regarding which laws to observe.

I strongly disagree with you on the tenor of conservatism. I'd suggest in fact that it is liberalism that spews hate far more often when people do not just roll over and accept what they say is "true". It is the biggest reason why Obama and the Democrats are going to be run out of office - because they simply do not listen to the electorate.

Certainly some Republicans/conservatives are far off to the right and are no example for anyone to follow - but then they have equally ridiculous counterparts on the left.

I believe Barack Obama is on a deliberate and planned path to try and destroy this country. I think he hates America and following in the footsteps of mentors like Rev. Wright, he desires to destroy this country economically and eventually try to disassemble the military and destroy it politically. I believe he knows he is a one-term President and has only these four years to do the damage.

Having said all that.....anyone who advocates the assasination of the President of this nation - no matter what that President espouses for policy and no matter what any of us thinks of his policies, should be arrested and tried for both the call for murder and for treason. We can run Obama and his co-conspirators out of office in elections or impeachment if it is deserved - there is no need to agitate for his removal by death and the sad thing is there are all manner of whack job idiots on both the left and the right side of the political spectrum who only need "permission" such as this to assume they have a green light.

This story simply validates my view.

Conservative Blogger Urges Obama Assassination on Twitter - DailyFinance

As Congress neared a vote on the controversial health insurance reform bill, a self-described conservative blogger used his public Twitter account to urge the assassination of President Barack Obama, and then recanted. The Secret Service is investigating.

You both cherry pick to wave your preferred flag, truth be told. And the Repubs were just run out for the same reason. It's a weak stance on both your parts.

Much as I oppose the Neo-Cons as dangerous, even I wouldn't go this far.

So his grand plan is to increase the number of Americans who will have health coverage because that will somehow destroy the country? If he was going to dissamble the military before 2012 he would have had to have started by now, the 2011 fiscal year budget is being worked on right now after all.

You don't have to like the President but let the evidence from reality penetrate occasionally and realize your belief is thoroughly disproven.
