By Les Blumenthal | McClatchy Newspapers WASHINGTON — Conservative talk show hosts and columnists have ridiculed an 11-year-old Washington state boy's account of his mother's death as a "sob story" exploited by the White House and congressional Democrats like a "kiddie shield" to defend their health care legislation.

Marcelas Owens, whose mother got sick, lost her job, lost her health insurance and died, said Thursday he's taking the attacks from Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Michelle Malkin in stride.

"My mother always taught me they can have their own opinion but that doesn't mean they are right," Owens, who lives in Seattle, said in an interview.

Owens' grandmother, Gina, who watched her daughter die, isn't quite so generous."These are adults, and he is an 11-year-old boy who lost his mother," Gina Owens said. "They should be ashamed."

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., told Marcelas Owens' story to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House health care summit last month. Murray also has spoken about it on the Senate floor. Last week, Owens was in the nation's capital to speak at a health care rally and to meet with Senate Democratic leadership.

Limbaugh, Beck and Malkin are skeptical about the story, saying there were other forms of medical help available after Owens' mother, Tifanny, lost her health insurance. They lambasted Democrats for using the story.

"Now this is unseemly, exploitative, an 11-year-old boy being forced to tell his story all over just to benefit the Democrat Party and Barack Obama," Limbaugh said on March 12, according to a transcript his show. "And, I would say this to Marcelas Owens: 'Well, your mom would still have died, because Obamacare doesn't kick in until 2014.'"

An 11-year-old Washington state boy whose mother died after she lost her job and her health insurance after becoming sick has come under fire from conservative talk show hosts and columnists.

Well, I'm watching the democrats use this kid, right now on youtube, and am disgusted they'd USE this kid for emotional gain. You don't put a kid in the middle of the debate, and open him up to this shit.

Pure shit those involved are.

naysayers should really bone up on what will immediately be implemented when the bill is signed.

I see, so we can blame this on those who used his mother's death as an example of why we need health care reform and we can excuse those like Malkin, Beck, and Limbaugh because, after all, he was put out there so they had every right to attack.

Sort of the reverse of what you said when Palin's kids were in the spotlight.

But let me re-post this again, because if you want to really know what "pure shit" is it is this man:

Limbaugh said on March 12 ..."And, I would say this to Marcelas Owens: 'Well, your mom would still have died, because Obamacare doesn't kick in until 2014.'"

Personally, I think it's despicable on both sides.  If I was this boy's Grandmother who is now taking care of him, I wouldn't let any of these people anywhere near him.

I don't know, but it just astounds me someone would say this.

The kid's mother dies and Limbaugh berates him on air?  An eleven-year old?

And Beck and Malkin were almost as disgusting.

I agree and I have to wonder how did an 11 year old find out what Rush said about him? Did he hear it by accident or did someone tell him about it? And if they told him, why?

I have to agree with you on this. And, too, when these things are pointed out, the responses too often descend into Kindergarten arguments of the "they did it too!" variety, as if one asshole justifies another -- which seems to be the animating philosophy here.

Myself, I'm sort of wondering why the fat fuck said it in the first place.

But you're probably right, we should blame those who told him.

Though I do think that most eleven-year olds are probably capable of operating a television or a radio.  They may even know how to use the internet.

When it was Palin's kids, it was OK to attack them, because they were campaigning for their mom, but since it's some poor little Democrat example, out comes the mighty outrage!!!!

Rush made a valid point, There won't be any coverage for 4 LONG years, try asking your boss at work for 4 years of salary in advance, and lets see the faux outrage when he laughs in your face.

Really?

You don't see the difference between criticizing a politician who preaches abstinence and whose daughter gets pregnant and attacking a child who has lost his mother?

It's not about whether he made a valid point, it's about the scummy way he went about making that point.

Or maybe it was the grandmother who believed by doing this she could promote a cause that may have kept her daughter alive.

Shit, now I have to break the news to my son that once he graduates...he's on his own as far as coverage.....oh wait a minute,no I don't.
Though the bill doesn't come into full effect till '14,there are some parts of it that are immediately in effect.I,for one have no idea if the mother would or would not have been able to have coverage under this plan...nor do I know whether or not,in her case, the outcome would be different.
What I do know, based on this instance and other occurrences is Rush is one sleaze bag example of a human being. One has to wonder just where is his own personal Rubicon?....does he even have a line he feels he would not cross?

Maybe, but then again, I'm not that kind of Grandma.

See, if I believed that if I wanted to promote a cause, I would be the person stepping up to the plate.  I wouldn't be offering up My eleven year old Grandchild to be the one to do this.  I'd have done it Myself and then anybody who wished to could say anything they wanted to about Me.

You'd have to know Me, hon.  I'm fiercely protective.

As I recall, there was plenty of outrage over the treatment that Palin's kids were perceived to have received, though perhaps not entirely from the same people of course. But when a kid is trotted out to center stage and put in the spotlight as a political shill, whether for a piece of legislation or for a candidate, he's facing an audience for better or worse. Flying vegetables come with the territory.

The adults damn well know that. Sometimes I have to wonder if some of them aren't counting on vegetables being thrown, so they can point the righteous finger.

But in any case, this kid is now, just like Palin's kids were then, fair game. It ain't pretty, but that's the world we live in. Indulging in outrage was a waste of time in the matter of Palin's kids, and will be a waste of time in this one, until we all, collectively, decide to stop pointing fingers and take care of the behavior that we do control, which is our own. In the meantime, I hope never to be in the news for any reason whatsoever.

K.

I find that people who disagree with a position will get like that when you point out there are real world consequences for the positions they advocate.... it doesn't shock me, unfortunately.

The healthcare debate has brought out some pretty distasteful behavior

Have you ever lost a parent because of a lack of health insurance? I lost my father when I was 13 because we lost our health coverage. He would have lived had he been able to get regular checkups.
