Ialdabaoth -> Jesus: a quick summary (3/22/2010 1:32:28 PM)

"Teacher, the Bible says not to bear false witness or swear false oaths. This preacher says that only oaths sworn in this manner are binding, whereas this preacher over hear says that oaths sworn this way are binding too. What do you think?"

"I think it'd be a lot simpler if you just always kept your word, instead of trying to rules-lawyer when you think God will hold you to it - don't you?"

"Teacher, the Bible says not to charge exorbitant interest rates, but this rabbi says that 2% is too high and this one says that 10% is fine. What do you think?"

"I think it'd be a lot simpler if you just avoided charging people money for the privilege of doing them a favor, don't you?"

"Teacher, the Bible says that if someone breaks your tooth, you can break his tooth in retribution, and that if someone gouges out your eye, you can gouge out his eye in return, but what about when it gets more complicated, like if he pokes out your eye but he's already blind or something?"

"I think it'd be a lot simpler if you just didn't try to get back at people at all, and just tried to forgive them when they hurt you, don't you?"

"Teacher, the Bible says that we should help our neighbors, but it's not entirely specific as to how far out that goes - does a heretic count?"

"Look, if a priest, a politician and a heretic are all walking down the road, and you're on the side of the road bleeding to death, and the priest and the politician won't help you but the heretic takes you to the hospital, I think the heretic counts as your neighbor, don't you? Anyone is your neighbor if you'll be neighborly."

"But Teacher, the Bible says -"

"Oh, for Dad's sake LOOK. LOVE GOD AND BE NICE TO EACH OTHER. That's all the Bible says! All the rest is useless details if you just remember to be nice to each other! See? Isn't that simple?"

(five minutes later) "Hey, you want to be rich, right? God rewards those who give to m-er, Him. Our call center is standing by... You don't wanna go to Hell, do ya? You know the Bible says -"

"DO NONE OF YOU MOTHER FUCKERS LISTEN!?" And Jesus did rage out.

The way I look at the bible is God Himself did not write all of it. I think some of it would be the things He wanted said in His book.

But it is written by white men (I am speaking figuratively about that unloving mindset that often finds itself incorrectly in authority positions, no matter what color of their skin or gender even) who edited, manipulated, swerved, left out and skewed stuff in it making it a book with pure bullshit in it presenting itself as complete truth.

You have a gut and your gut can guide you.

Sounds right feels wrong. Is a good niggle to watch.

What is good for the one is good for the One is another guide.

It was written that it is the Living Word.

Living is a process, mistakes, perceptions, judgments, imprints, misunderstandings, neglected unfinished places has very much been a part of out life. I look at the bible like that. Full of crap and full of wonder. Truth and not so much, stuff needing to be faced honestly with good intent and stuff worth repeating.

How much would you love it if God wrote another book where not one word could be twisted and so on? What do you think He would say huh? Could you believe that would be possible? If not do you really think God could not write a bigger and better book than one thousands of years old?

Ialdabaoth, interesting post, and close to the mark, IMO.

hc, the gut can indeed be a conduit to the right path, but I question some folks guts.

Elisabella, ut oh, I kinda fall in the Mark Driscoll camp (whoever he is).

Well Level, people with evil intent are just that it is our own guts we need to heed when they sense red flags and the like of others potentially trying to pull a fast one. I doubt it is the guts of those folks guiding them though, more like greed and things like that. Nothing to do with the gut. I would say they ignore their guts to they feel nothing at all anymore.

Not a bad little place to start.  Now work in kicking the moneychangers out of the temple and telling people to sell their clothes to buy weapons.  After that, you can go on to the casting out demons thing, and the deep sarcasm of saying "the meek shall inherit the earth."

I hope they do, there are many more meek people on this planet than the other kind and they deserve the earth.

I dont understand what you mean here in your usage of "the deep sarcasm"?

Are you fucking kidding me here?

God I see that picture of Obama as a bootblack and think "what the hell" and then the next post is this shit?

White men are white men. A black woman in a position of power is NOT a white man no matter what she does.

This forum is raising my blood pressure.

If this is your Jesus, the Jesus of the bible, he is a bigot. Stumbling block for Jews? Why don't we really sit down and take a good hard look at the bible and what it says. If you do this, you'll find that the bible is REPULSIVE.

Repulsive, part 2.

Smutmonger -> RE: Jesus: a quick summary (3/23/2010 10:23:13 AM)

The repulsive part of the bible is how long and well is has been used to justify doing EVIL. And that has not changed.

DarlingSavage -> RE: Jesus: a quick summary (3/23/2010 10:26:54 AM)

Quite honestly, I found Elisabella's link to ALSO be repulsive.

Smutmonger -> RE: Jesus: a quick summary (3/23/2010 10:28:17 AM)

The meek usually inherit the dung.

mnottertail -> RE: Jesus: a quick summary (3/23/2010 10:31:47 AM)

Jesus!!!!!! This was supposed to be a quick summary......

BKSir -> RE: Jesus: a quick summary (3/23/2010 10:33:14 AM)

Level?  Did you get switched out for a pod person, or did I?  I've actually been agreeing with you the last few days, and it's kind of creeping me out. [;)]

That was about as close to my camp as any...  Although none of them really fit for me.

I've always believed that the Bible was a really interesting book full of some interesting ideas, and many good ideas even, but is not set in stone, as it was written by man, not god.  And can you truly find any two people on this planet who would describe god the same way?  No.  God, to me is an individual and personal thing, and some dude that's been dead for 1700 years certainly hasn't been told the same things as I have from god.

*Disclaimer:  God and the use of the term are simplified terms, meant in no way to associate gender or denomination to any spiritual, energy, physical or mental being, either real or imaginary.

Smutmonger -> RE: Jesus: a quick summary (3/23/2010 10:33:16 AM)

he was the Jew that Knew?

I like this one:

If your Jesus . . .
. . . never mentions your sinfulness or his holiness, but instead emphasizes having a good time in church with a rockin’ praise band; boasts of a fun atmosphere for kids; has a relevant message from the latest Hollywood movie; and offers free coffee and donuts in the lounge . . . . . . then you worship the Laodicean Jesus (see also Mega-Church Jesus below).

But wait, this one is not bad either:

If your Jesus . . .
. . . is a hippie-like figure who no longer considers the Bible as a final authority but questions the very Scriptures and their perspicuity, even going as far as to justify such sins as homosexuality; who no longer differentiates between sheep and goats, wheat and tares, truth and error, light and darkness, the broad road and the narrow path, but now warmly accepts Roman Catholicism, Lecto Divina, and other false religious traditions and mystical practices  (it would be judgmental not to); and whose motto is “come as you are and you can stay that way too because only Pharisees would tell you otherwise,” . . . . . . then you worship the Emergent Jesus.

There are just so many Jesuses to choose from, how can a person decide?

I have the same problem picking my laundry detergent.

This.

I look at today's bible as a cute, but difficult to read, fairy tale that has been so bastardized beyond recognition it isn't worth trying to read.
