Brain -> Internet threatens rare species, conservationists warn (3/23/2010 12:34:12 AM)

This is unfortunate.   Why people need a polar bear or a salamander for Gods’ sake I will never understand.  If they can’t police this it’s because they don’t have the resources because of right wing conservative tax cuts and depressions.

Internet threatens rare species, conservationists warn

Conservationists say the internet has emerged as one of the biggest threats to endangered species.

Campaigners say it is easier than ever before to buy and sell anything from live baby lions to polar bear pelts on online auction sites and chat rooms.

The findings were presented at the 175-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites), which is meeting in Doha, Qatar.

Several proposals to give endangered species more protection were defeated.

Delegates will vote on changes to the trade in ivory later this week.

Web effect

"The internet is becoming the dominant factor overall in the global trade in protected species," said Paul Todd of the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

He said thousands of endangered species are regularly traded on the internet, as buyers and sellers take advantage of the anonymity - and vast global market - the world wide web can offer.

Those trying to police illegal sales say the size of problem is almost impossible to estimate. They say the US is the biggest market, but that Europe, China, Russia and Australia also play a large part.

On Sunday, delegates voted to ban all international trade in a rare type of Iranian salamander, the Kaiser's Spotted Newt, which the World Wildlife Fund says has been devastated by the internet trade.
However, more high-profile attempts to ban trade in polar bears, bluefin tuna and rare corals have all failed, leaving environmental activists dismayed, the BBC's Stephanie Hancock reports from Doha.

A proposal from the US and Sweden to regulate the trade in red and pink coral - which is crafted into expensive jewellery and sold extensively on the web - was defeated.

Delegates voted the idea down mostly over concerns the increased regulations might impact poor fishing communities.

Obviously you've never tasted freshly slaughtered Polar Bear meat. Nothing better.

I'm hoping I'm the winning bidder on this auction for a 3 month old polar bear, as my stock ran out a month or so ago, and I bet the meat is tender, and sweeter the younger the bear is.

Ummmm, getting hungry just thinking about it.

I'll be expecting all you bleeding hearts to be logging off pronto, because you're destroying the planet. Once you've logged off for good, I'll log off for good as well - I promise.

They already block his site in some locales.

I feel like this section has become yahoo news.  lol

Thank goodness more and more people are becoming aware of the problem's the Earth, it's plants and animals are facing. We should be stewards of the Earth and all it's creatures so that 100 years from our decendants will have the same opportunities to view Mother Earth and all her gifts that we have enjoyed over the years. We can only hope the higher intellects prevail when making decisions for our planet.

The source of the problem is a monetary-based economic system with its inherent scarcity issues, not right-wing conservatives.

The article states pretty clearly that the net allows this traffic because of its anonymnity and pervasiveness.  So how would the bleeding hearts logging off solve that problem?
For gods sake don't log off, you are more fun to watch than a pay toilet in a diarrhea ward.  You are one of the few people I have seen  in my life who will shoot themselves in the foot and then try to mooch some more ammo so you can reload and do it again.

Please let "Canadian wanna-be American liberals" be listed as endangered, I'd be happy to feed one to a Polar Bear.

pahunkboy -> RE: Internet threatens rare species, conservationists warn (3/23/2010 9:26:53 AM)

shut down CM.

someone might do or say something illegal.

Yup-  no doubt.   the answer clearly is the SHUT DOWN THE NET.

You FOOLS.  Cant you see this is manipulative propaganda?     The punch line is to shut down the web.

You find beheading(by a warrior in response to his country being invaded) to be inhumane
... but...
you feel happiness at seeing another human being(whom you disagree with politically) eaten by a bear
...you have a strange set of values.

Well, thank god for you running in here and telling us, otherwise I would have thought that the net makes it easier for those engaged in trade of endangered species.

Gonna unplug it right after I chop down some paper birches, outta corncobs and it aint the season yet.

LOL... and most people today would agree with you.

Just remember, the only limitations to the future of humankind are those that we impose upon ourselves.
