That was an awesome post Braniac. It makes me wonder though...the Roman Empire was conquered by Christ (though not in the two armies meet on a field way) and I wonder if that would actually mean it's a true prophecy...I'm not familiar with all the details about how it's supposed to happen, is there anything that would support the Christianization of the Roman Empire being parallel to the book of Revelations?

Thanks for the compliment. I will never turn down "awesome" when it's offered.

As for the Roman Empire being conquered by Christ, I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Historically, there are many reasons why the Roman Empire collapsed, but being conquered by Christ was not one of them. That is a whole other thread. However, the book of Revelation does predict that the end times will culminate with the destruction of the "whore of Babylon" (code for Rome), then the armies of Christ defeating the Antichrist in a great cosmic battle resulting in the Antichrist being thrown into the lake of fire forever. Many Christians view these predictions as prophecy, but they are in fact a very common ancient Jewish and Christian literary device called Apocalypse (thus Revelation is called the Apocalypse of John). There are no actual prophecies in the Bible, only apocalyptic visions, such as the book of Daniel and Ezra, and many teachings of Christ and Peter (but I'm certain this statement will also spawn another thread). All apocalypses had a few things in common:

  • they were written by people who shared a view that the world was divided into good and evil
  • the present was evil and controlled by Satan, and the future was good and controlled by God
  • God would eventually destroy the forces of evil and pass judgement on those who didn't believe, and this judgement was imminent
  • they were meant to protest the current establishment and order and provide hope (and sometimes warning) that God was in control and would eventually intervene on behalf of the faithful

In order to make sense of the Book of Revelation, it is important to understand the historical context of the time in which Jesus lived. The Jews and Christians were horribly and mercilessly persecuted by the Romans. Their lives were miserable and often without hope, much like what modern day Palestinians might be experiencing. Revelation was written apx 60-90 yrs after Jesus death, and long after many Christians believed that Jesus would return to earth and deliver them. John was sending a message to the 7 Christian churches of Asia Minor who had fallen into apathy and lost hope to encourage them to keep the faith and let them know that he had indeed received a divine vision predicting the destruction of their oppressors and that their suffering was not in vain and would soon come to an end. Every generation of Christian since then has believed that this "prophecy" would come true in their lifetime, and this generation is no different.

I hope this answers your question.

Well, contrary to how it might appear, I didn't choose the nic because I believe I'm smarter than everyone else. In fact, there are more than a few people in these forums who could teach me a thing or two. I chose the nic because I wanted to send a message to the type of person I wished to attract.

I could have gone with PhatTwat4U, or HolesGalore, or GetItB4ItsGone, but then I would have ended up with that fucker domiguy.

He isn't the antiChrist but he's certainly anti-American. He won't even wear a flag lapel pin on his suit. We also have pictures of him praying as a Muslim, and a video of him admitting he is a muslim. Some of you people are living in fantasy land if you think this guy is loyal to America. In fact, his sole objective is to impoverish America as much as possible to turn it into a socialist nightmare. This is what happens when you don't elect someone raised in America.

Although we are each entitled to our own opinions, we are not entitled to our own facts. I presented some facts that support a "theory" that is far more plausible than yours, given those facts. I didn't disregard any part of a "prophecy" you mentioned, it's just that there is nothing stated in the book of Revelation that cannot be better explained when taken in the context of the theory I presented above. Your interpretation requires a HUGE stretch of imagination to believe that anything written in Revelation has any relevance beyond the audience and events of that time.

Thus endeth the lesson

Bullshit, Brainia.  Your facts about Rome and Nero are sufficient to form a theory around, and it's a theory that has been embraced by many within some branches of the faith, but it ignores, as you have continued to do, every bit of the prophecy that doesn't fit.  That amounts to most of the book.  I addressed this before you ever chimed in, and you just keep pretending it isn't there.

I understand the desire of many Christians to just make all this dark stuff go away, but don't you fucking DARE try to call it a "fact" and dismiss the opinions of millions of others who don't embrace the new, improved doctrine.

Please though, unless you'll find it easier to just admit you fucking lied about what you ignored, and spouted bullshit you heard in whatever Laodicean church you find your answers in, explain to me how the mark of the beast was applied under Nero, and how none could buy or sell without it?  Who were the vocal critics that the whole world saw die, and what methodology made that possible?  Geology is a hobby of mine, and while I know about the hypothesis of an astronomical impact about 10,000 years ago, into the icepack, I've completely missed anything wiping out 1/3 of the planet's population in the last 1,900.  Got anything on that?

The Horsemen are off the table, so no distractions.  War, disease, famine and disaster are constants.  Go for the biggies. (Though a case would be made from the other side that modern communications make us aware of them in ways undreamed of by previous generations.)

Have you ever even tried reading Revelation for yourself?  Get a King Jimmy translation, read it like poetry.  That's some fun, scary shit in there.  Much better than the Omen.

Few things deomonstrated the sheer stupidity of election coverage than the kerfluffle about the damn flag pins.  While Nixon started the tradition, it really didn't take off until after 9/11 with the Bush administration and in particular Fox News.  You'd think the Founding Father's wore 'em, fer cryin' in the beer.

Do you seriously mean that you're not a real American unless you wear a flag pin on your lapel?  That's like saying only people with "support our troops" ribbons actually support the troops.

Umm, is this what passes for discourse on religion?  I came out with heretical views on the entire dispensational movement (in that it is not founded in Scripture) and I didn't get a torching.  I don't believe in inerrancy and believe that there were 4 authors of the Hebrew Bible (a scholarly point of view.)

She doesn't agree with you, and you don't with her.  Not a single one of us on earth can claim perfect knowledge of this book, since we aren't talking to the author.  You can theorize based on the politics and society of the day.

As an aside, the dangerous thing about apocalyptic beliefs is that some folks will then have no interest whatsoever in averting war, disaster, or resource depletion, and may even encourage activities that bring about their prophecies.

No he's not the anti-christ but I think that after this healthcare vote he must certainly understand that before he does something he needs the support of the American People behind him.
Getting elected is one thing, having the people "with" you is another. And having the people "against" you is yet another.
You want to avoid the last in politics.

No, Obama is not the anti-christ. Rather he is the human host for the anti-christ born to Porcupiney in a manger in the woods a few years ago - this is why no one had heard of him before and why he's come to be President from nowhere. That he was Muslim is also proven by this as the human host must be unbaptised and heathenistic towards Christ.

I don't know that version to be quite scriptural, LadyE (though St. Tre does have an interesting ring to it).
