But the VAT adds taxation at each level of production, correct?
ummmm, I don't know. I do file a report that reimburses me 100% when I leave the country; however it's a pain in the ass to get the special VAT receipts unless it's a big ticket item. You're right it also varies from one country to the next. I believe the UK is considering a temporary increase in their VAT.

I'm heading back at the end of May and will try to find out more about how that works. I know it applies to services as well as goods; which is what they are attempting to do in CA since not one representative things another tax hike will pass.

One year after implementing the highest tax increase in the history of the US to bridge a revenue gap; there is a bigger gap this year with revenue down dramatically. Businesses and people are leaving CA at a record pace; with them go the tax revenue.

Hey - nothing it permanent except death and taxes. However, one thing is sure in my situation, dying gets REAL expensive if I do it in the US after 2010!

Its the outrageous taxes in Europe, and the level of governmental control over your lives that you put up with that baffle me. You may prefer a government which acts like a stern nanny who wipes your nose and wipes your ass and burps you and feeds you and gives you a good spanking then puts you to bed if you yearn for a bit of freedom, but we're not all like that over here.

Many of us prefer to be more indepoendant than that, and we tend to enjoy an invigorating level of liberty.

Being European i'm used to a good working health care system. Any time i learn of an American citizen losing his house and the shirt off his back because he didn't have insurance or it wouldn't cover whatever medical treatment he required, i feel embarrassed. As you should feel.
Things like that shouldn't happen in a civilized country!

Give this plan a chance to prove itself. I'm sure there are many flaws but that's no reason to bite off its head.

Could you throw in a chorus of "God Bless America" with that?

The Star Spangled Banner?

Because we here Americans don't take to none of that there European socialism.

This here is America goddamnit, love it or leave it.

Is it any wonder most of the world thinks we're morons?

Europeans are gloating this week. The continent might be struggling with ballooning debts, a faltering euro and national strikes, but when the U.S. House voted in favor of President Barack Obama's health care bill Sunday night, March 21, Europeans seized the moment to thumb their noses at Americans and remind them that they've had pretty good health care for decades.

"On Sunday evening the richest, most powerful country in the world, the USA, finally entered the 20th century. Yes, not the 21st century, but the 20th," read an article published Monday on the popular French news website Rue89.com.

...In Europe, voters demand that their governments offer good public services — including decent education and medical care — and regularly vote them out of office when they fail to deliver. Taxes may be slightly higher in Europe, but medical fees are heavily subsidized by governments and are drastically cheaper than they are in the U.S.

Not to mention straight roads with no potholes, an electricity grid that doesn't go bonkers at the first sign of a little wind, an integrated public transport system, etc, etc, etc :-) .
