Incredible. Can the Republican "leadership" in this country possibly find any way to become even stupider or even more insane? It's a question I have to keep re-asking myself on almost a weekly basis. Just 3 days after former Dubya speechwriter David Frum wrote his brilliant analysis of how the Republican Party castrated itself with its incompetent mishandling of the health care debacle, he's been terminated by the conservative "think" tank the American Enterprise Institute.

quote:

Three days after calling health-care reform a debacle for Republicans, David Frum was forced out of his job at the American Enterprise Institute on Wednesday. The ouster also came one day after a harsh Wall Street Journal editorial ripped the former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, saying he "now makes his living as the media's go-to basher of fellow Republicans" and accusing him of "peddling bad revisionist history."

Your Coat and Hat, Sir

Translation: Republicans don't say unflattering things about other Republicans. Not if they want to stay in the club.

For those of you wondering what he said to provoke his fellow Republicans into tossing him headfirst out of the treehouse, here's an excerpt and a link -

quote:

Conservatives and Republicans today suffered their most crushing legislative defeat since the 1960s. It’s hard to exaggerate the magnitude of the disaster. Conservatives may cheer themselves that they’ll compensate for today’s expected vote with a big win in the November 2010 elections. But: (1) It’s a good bet that conservatives are over-optimistic about November – by then the economy will have improved and the immediate goodies in the healthcare bill will be reaching key voting blocs. (2) So what? Legislative majorities come and go. This healthcare bill is forever. A win in November is very poor compensation for this debacle now.
So far, I think a lot of conservatives will agree with me. Now comes the hard lesson: A huge part of the blame for today’s disaster attaches to conservatives and Republicans ourselves. At the beginning of this process we made a strategic decision: unlike, say, Democrats in 2001 when President Bush proposed his first tax cut, we would make no deal with the administration. No negotiations, no compromise, nothing. We were going for all the marbles. This would be Obama’s Waterloo – just as healthcare was Clinton’s in 1994.
Only, the hardliners overlooked a few key facts: Obama was elected with 53% of the vote, not Clinton’s 42%. The liberal block within the Democratic congressional caucus is bigger and stronger than it was in 1993-94. And of course the Democrats also remember their history, and also remember the consequences of their 1994 failure.
This time, when we went for all the marbles, we ended with none.
Could a deal have been reached? Who knows? But we do know that the gap between this plan and traditional Republican ideas is not very big. The Obama plan has a broad family resemblance to Mitt Romney’s Massachusetts plan. It builds on ideas developed at the Heritage Foundation in the early 1990s that formed the basis for Republican counter-proposals to Clintoncare in 1993-1994.
Barack Obama badly wanted Republican votes for his plan. Could we have leveraged his desire to align the plan more closely with conservative views? To finance it without redistributive taxes on productive enterprise – without weighing so heavily on small business – without expanding Medicaid? Too late now. They are all the law.

Heresy!

As I said, a brilliant piece of analysis and an even brillianter piece of writing. But you see, that kind of intellectual honesty and objectivity has no place in today's Republican Party. So Frum had to go. Because in the new Republican Kremlin, no member of the Politburo may speak against the Party in any way. Another opportunity to learn a valuable lesson wasted in spectacular fashion by the Party of Limbaugh.

Incredible. Just incredible.

Damn.  Kinda like what happened to Brock after he wrote his Hillary book.

I figured Frum was fairly bulletproof at the AEI though. I wonder if this line was more potent than the critique of Limbaugh, though:  "[the health care plan] builds on ideas developed at the Heritage Foundation in the early 1990s that formed the basis for Republican counter-proposals to Clintoncare in 1993-1994."

DarkSteven -> RE: Achtung, Herr Frum! Dissent ist Verbotten! (3/25/2010 7:14:27 PM)

I thought that Frum's piece was dead on.

But I'm not so sure that the GOP will win big in November.  The Tea Party is poised to bleed off their base if TP puts up third party candidates.  Plus if the Dems decided to go after the Republicans ("The GOP lied to you about Iraq and cost the country trillions it cannot afford.  Then they lied to you about healthcare, saying that we cannot afford that.  Send them a message this November"), they'd crush them.  The GOP still has not disavowed Bush and his policies.

Oh, shit. Now I feel like one of those people who say in their profile they're looking for an "intellegent" partner. I feel great shame. [&o]

Panda, thank you for for posting this.

It echos a discussion we've had here at home and where I work. The republicans seem to be allowing a few extremists to run away with the show.

For both democrats and republicans to succeed, for this country to succeed, the two parties need to set their petty BS aside and start working together for the people cthat voted them into office. And the American people need to stop buying into extremist hysteria. It's all getting very old.

Yep,I had this very argument with Thad and Merc just yesterday(on which of the many threads I,for the life of me couldn't say) one did not need to be a hot shot political anyalist to figure out that their strategy amounted to something akin to an all-in....and the other guy had  aces.Obama and the Democrats can now lay claim to not only doing this but to having to do so over the most strident opposition the Republican party could muster....so very sad.

As far as I can tell there is only extremist hysteria on one side.

Another ex-Republican speaks out -

quote:

Since he is no longer affiliated with AEI, I feel free to say publicly something he told me in private a few months ago. He asked if I had noticed any comments by AEI "scholars" on the subject of health care reform. I said no and he said that was because they had been ordered not to speak to the media because they agreed with too much of what Obama was trying to do.It saddened me to hear this. I have always hoped that my experience was unique. But now I see that I was just the first to suffer from a closing of the conservative mind. Rigid conformity is being enforced, no dissent is allowed, and the conservative brain will slowly shrivel into dementia if it hasn't already.Sadly, there is no place for David and me to go. The donor community is only interested in financing organizations that parrot the party line, such as the one recently established by McCain economic adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin.

Well Kirata, I can't tell if you are just making a joke, but I don't see the kind of hysteria evidenced by the teabaggers and others on the other side of the political divide.

To be fair though, the party in power rarely need resort to such shrillness...do they.

No, but with all the protests against Bush regarding the Iraq invasion I don't recall any extremism that compared to what is going on now.

What I love with this is how "one of them conservatives" is echoing our biased libewal analysis - it's pretty wonderful. The Republicans wanted everything, and so, ended up with fuck all: heaven.

Jeffff -> RE: Achtung, Herr Frum! Dissent ist Verbotten! (3/26/2010 6:17:30 AM)

This is what happens when people chase ideology, instead of ideas. Tow the party line or get sent off to the gulag

And folks are calling Democrats socialists.

There can be NO  dissension in the Party. Stalin would be proud
