U.S. bases in Afghanistan say goodbye to Whoppers, DQ

Whoppers, Dairy Queen sundaes and the latest movies will soon disappear for U.S. military personnel serving in Afghanistan, according to a blog posting by Sgt. Maj. Michael T. Hall discussing changes to morale, welfare and recreation facilities on U.S. bases there.

In an effort to put more focus on fighting the Taliban, the military is cutting back on "non-essentials" in Afghanistan, Hall announced on the International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan blog this week. Hall is the command sergeant major for ISAF.

On large U.S. facilities such as the Kandahar and Bagram air bases, that includes closing restaurants such as Burger King, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius and Pizza Hut, dropping first-run movies from base theaters and cutting the amount of canned and bottled goods imported from the States, Hall writes.

“This is a warzone – not an amusement park,” he writes.

“Supplying nonessential luxuries to big bases like Bagram and Kandahar makes it harder to get essential items to combat outposts and forward operating bases, where troops who are in the fight each day need resupplied with ammunition, food and water,” Hall says in the blog posting.

Hall says eliminating the restaurants and other facilities will free up space to accommodate more than 35,000 U.S. and allied troops who will be arriving in Afghanistan in the coming months.

"Bout fucking time if you want to actually WIN ...

The "let's support our troops" folks should get right behind it ... treating a war as a war and concentrating on winning it means doing whatever it takes to keep your frontline solid and in best fighting form.

This sounds like a very unpopular policy change for the troops. Will they be angry and resentful or will their efficiency increase? hm.....

best way to win is piss em all off LOL

NeedToUseYou -> RE: U.S. bases in Afghanistan say goodbye to Whoppers, DQ (3/26/2010 12:12:09 AM)

Good, we shouldn't be making "WAR" comfortable anyway.

JonnieBoy -> RE: U.S. bases in Afghanistan say goodbye to Whoppers, DQ (3/26/2010 12:50:09 AM)

I'm sure it would/will piss plenty of troops off ... those "in the rear, with the gear" most of all. Surely though, if there's a real war going on (yanno ... like ... not in the movies and such, where frontline troops are getting blown to fucking bits and retreating unnecessarily due to lack of effective support), you kinda have to get stuck in, back up those doing the dirty work close up with the enemy and it sure as hell makes sense to ditch the fancy (arguably unhealthy junkfood) grub if it helps save even one Yank life or shortens the war by even one day.

War is nasty ass stuff, it doesn't wait for "extra mayo" ... just think ... there's a possibility ... since you're in a war ... that you might loose (... and the "bases" will BECOME the front line if that starts happening)

Pirate
(You as in "you might loose" meaning the USA/UK, not yourself personally)

FR

I'm all for the soldiers getting better chow than MREs all the time, but fast food ? There's an enemy somewhere around there who is trying to kill them, I don't think it's such a good idea to help that cause. I think if they are going to try to take care of the boys they should do it with good steak dinners, roasts and such. Good fresh veggies and otherwise wholesome foods. It wouldn't be that much trouble in comparison to setting up something like the green zone in Iraq. In fact just dismantling the bases in Iraq is costly.

But if they have somwhere to watch movies already on their off time, I see nothing wrong with letting them have the new releases. For free in fact, because even if the premise is a bit off, they are fighting for the government that enforces intellectual property rights. As such let them have all the new stuff as long as they are putting their ass on the line.

But on the same note, the large aircraft carriers have been described as floating cities. They have bars and restaurants and so forth. One might wonder if the space used for such things would be better spent for stowing more weaponry and ammo, which may help assure the boys get home alive so that later they can clog up their arteries with all the things they didn't have in the army.

Funny (odd), this brings to mind an episode of MASH in which Hawkeye orders food from Adam's Ribs in Chicago (I think). It was a rare treat, but if there was an Adam's franchise right in the compound, many would walk right past and get a bowl of sushi or whatever.

I say if you want the soldiers to have comforts, set up a nice restaurant, not a freakin' McDonald's.

This is obviously straight from the desk of the head of the socialist nanny state - enforcing a healthy diet and discouraging interest in anything that doesnt suit the socialist nanny state rather than giving the troops what they want, that is the choice to eat junk food and sit around watching films. Next we shall see "orientation officers" despatched to each base who shall preach the values of Marxism to troops as the only form of entertainment available.

Meanwhile, Baltimore is cutting its police and fire forces.

How exactly do you add that one up?
