I will be attempting to grow tomatoes and strawberries in planters on my porch this year. Note attempting. The last few years, all I did was grow little green shoots that the bunny enjoyed eatting once they died.

mostly flowers and potted herbs. Master will handle the garden.

Maybe that falls under "what do you use to fertilize with?"

We could start a new thread...

Wow i am seriously envious. I hate bugs, but more so i hate spiders. Its all i can do to keep spiders from deciding that right underneath my overhang is a cool place to make a home in the summer - i mean first year i was here like 10 of them decided to do so all across my overhang, AND a few decided the corner of my doorframe was cool -- another story -- shudders. They also like the bushes outside near the sidewalk and along the side of my sidewalk near my door. So i don't spend a lot of time outside the front of my apt to be able to grow things even if i could. and i don't want to add more stuff for them to camp in.

I do love greenery in my house though (yes yes a lot of fake cause well they sorta die on me lol). I am thinking of starting a herb one in my kitchen but will have to see, i will need a grow light due to the fact i get no sunlight in my house :-(

Anyway, sounds awesme what people are doing.

If you hate spiders, never, ever grow grapes. I used to think it would be so cool to take a book and sit on the little bench under the arbor, until I found out how much spiders love grapes. After taking a close look at one, I have decided to buy my grapes in the store and just invest in a nice hammock.

I bought one of the upside down hangers to try tomatoes in, but I have no idea if they work or not. Has anyone else tried these?

My house is pretty dark too.  In my kitchen, over my sink on either side are rounded knick knack shelves, and above on each side is a light bulb.  I get those energy saver bulbs.  Anyway, I've a parsley on one shelf and oregano on the other, and the plants are very happy and growing like weeds.  I'm lazy and leave those cheap lights on 24/7, but the plants don't care.  I water them about every 3rd day and ignore them the rest of the time.

Also, Walmart sold a portable greenhouse with 2 or 3 shelves, my cats had fun with it and ripped the clear plastic but...mwahahaha, I bought a heavier grade of plastic and plan to foil them.

Anyway, those florescent light tubes (the kind used in offices) work fine, and I plan to buy 2 and attach them to my greenhouse, as I want it indoors instead of outdoors.  There's a timer I plan to buy at a pet store, for fish tanks, that can automatically turn the lights off and on.

We homeschool, and saw an experiment once with plants, and all lightbulbs seemed to work the same, whether "grow" lights, regular, or energy saver.  They have to be something like a foot above the plant.  I remember hearing that 25 watt bulbs were used, of the regular type.

An ex of mine did that, they work fairly well.  If the tomatoes are too heavy the stalks will crack.  They also heat up a fair bit so you need to keep an eye on the water.

fast reply...

Plum tomatoes for sure, and I'm thinking of planting potatoes in a bag like they have at Gardeners Supply.  And some herbs.
