Politesub53 -> Nuclear weapons deal (3/26/2010 4:04:21 PM)

Russia and America have today agree a big reduction in nuclear weapons, thanks to talks started bt President Obama. Since the salt talks there has slowly and surely been a big reduction in the number of nuclear weapons in circulation. At least it is a step in the right direction for a safer future.

Thank you for posting this, polite sub. It is another step in the right direction. But there are still concerns about India, Pakistan and North Korea; along with the arsenal from the former USSR on the Black Market being sold to Iran and Libya.

I watched the announcement earlier and was waiting for an actual copy of the text to be available. From what I understand there will be a 30% reduction by both sides in the number of warheads, with what they described as strict verification check valves. The number of deployment systems (which include bombers and subs) would be limited to 700 deployed. There is something strange in the preambe that may prevent this from passing the Senate though, it is worded to suggest that the agreement also links in the missile defense shield.

I am all for reducing the number of warheads, and it at least is a good way to suggest that others do so as well.

I am still concerned about the announcement last week while Sect. Clinton was over there, about Russia building a nuclear reactor in Iran.

I was just watching the news and they said that Obama took any off any wording about the missle defense system.  They said if they wanted to limit the MDS then the US would walk away and so it was dropped

That is what they said on the news (ABC) ,

In the interviews I saw they explained that the Russians (parliment?) wouldn't agree to the deal without it being included in the preamble. Those present also stated that it was more of a window dressing thing than anything binding, but it still depending on how worded could keep the Senate from ratifying.

I guess there will be amendments to the details as it passes into law. The basics seem to be that there will be a limit of 1500 bombs and 700 launchers. I think once both countries get the idea that the other is serious, we could see nuclear stockpiles fall dramatically.

Thadius, Russia have announced safeguards concerning the nuclear power plant, which the US seem happy with.

"He added that the United States did not oppose the Bushehr plant or Russia’s involvement in it, only the timing of the announcement. The plant is not controversial because the Russians plan to provide fuel for it and to remove spent fuel that could be converted for weapons use. "

hmmm ran out of DU and need more for armor piecing rounds eh?

Thadius -> RE: Nuclear weapons deal (3/26/2010 4:42:13 PM)

Don't mind me, I am just a bit jaded and skeptical when it comes to guarantees of safeguards or compliance with UN regulations when it comes to the Russians and them making a few bucks in the Middle East. Oil for food comes to mind and some of the tech that was given to Iraq...

I guess there is always the old fall back position of "trust but verify".

Politesub53 -> RE: Nuclear weapons deal (3/26/2010 4:54:29 PM)

It wasnt just Russia with the oil for food though. Nato allies France and Germany were happily doing deals. A dose of Scepticism is healthy enough though.

Jaded and skeptical work well in the world we all live in today, Thadius. [;)]

Sicne you brought up the "SALT TALKS" did you know that the US is dumping thousands of barrels of depleted uranium just a few miles west of Salt Lake City Utah?

Utah officials say they were unaware.

I seriously doubt that the Russians are our worst enemy.
