The new mandate requiring Americans to buy health insurance is “the most egregious, unconstitutional legislation that we can remember,” said South Carolina Republican Attorney General Henry McMaster. He is among more than a dozen state attorneys general who have filed a lawsuit asking the courts to declare the mandate unconstitutional because it is “an unprecedented encroachment” on the rights of both individuals and the states by the federal government. The political scrum that’s erupted over the mandate plan is deeply ironic—given that the idea has been warmly embraced by elements of the right since at least the early 1970s.

Has the GOP lost its "soul"? Did it ever have one? (Sorry, had to toss that one in [8D] )

I have to look into it but it appears according to David Frum the Republican Party is controlled by Fox news and Rupert Murdoch owns Fox news so it appears the people with the gold are the ones who control Republican party behavior and policy.

Level... it's a sad day when Brain is the only one to comment on a post of yours.

I think the difference is between believing there to be a need for health care reform and mandating all Americans to buy health insurance.

Edited to add:  Ooops... Vendaval slipped in there before my post.  [:)]

Brain: I don't see anyone controlling either party, but there certainly seems to have been a shift the last number of years.

Vendaval: Is it my birthday? [:D]

Treasure: Meh, some subjects catch fire, some drown [:)] And I agree with your comment on the two approaches; I'm not sure what's best, though.

Mandated coverage is a good idea. That the Republican politicians who formerly supported it now reject it is a symptom of how the GOP has become the party of no rather than the conservative party.

I do not care about constitutionality; for me the mandate requiring Americans to buy health insurance from pro profit private companies is just plain wrong. US health care industry sucks in about twice money (per capita) other industrial developed countries spend (with better results). Adding new funds into the ineffective system is just stupidity. Forcing citizens to participate in stupidity is called abuse of power.
