Nooo, no no.  That's the teabaggees.  I hate it when they call the tea partiers "tea baggers".  I'm a proud teabagger, and do not even remotely want to be lumped with them.

On the contrary, I don't know what the words mean, it is why I asked, but from what I have read so far, I am still fairly clueless, as it seems there are many meanings some I guess ranging from insult to personal understanding. But, I thank all who have contributed so far, for it has been educational and in some part, humorous.

But another word has appeared, scrota, what is that, some kind of fungus ?

Hey, as long as we are getting all international, maybe our UK friends can explain the following oddities:

"Page 3 girl"
"Cock up"
"Gobsmacked"
"Yobs", esp. "Crackdown on"
"Jack Straw"

The following headline in the Daily Mail:

"Gorbals Bleated-What A Gallumphing Numptie!"

Explain that one, and we might translate "shiznit".

Hey, as long as we are getting all international, maybe our UK friends can explain the following oddities:

"Page 3 girl" - Women with large bosoms who appear topless on page 3 of the adult comic called The Sun
"Cock up" -   A mess, disaster
"Gobsmacked"- Surprised
"Yobs", esp. "Crackdown on"- Yobs being people who annoy others, usually youths, Crackdown on, meaning someone intends to do something about the annoying some times law breaking youths
"Jack Straw" - A labour party politician, or a nobody, ( not meant to include the politician, but a name for a nobody, Joe bloggs, man on the street etc)

The following headline in the Daily Mail:

"Gorbals Bleated-What A Gallumphing Numptie!" Gorbals is a name, bleating is what sheep do lots off, a plaintive cry possibly, gallumphing meaning large, big and stupid, numptie, meaning brainless, idiot

Explain that one, and we might translate "shiznit".

Hey, as long as we are getting all international, maybe our UK friends can explain the following oddities:

"Page 3 girl" ................A model who has appeared on page three of the Sun newspaper.

"Cock up".....................This means a mistake, it derives from breweing when if a batch went bad, the stop cock was turned up too drain the barrel.

"Gobsmacked"......... Struck dumb, IE smacked in the mouth.

"Yobs", esp. "Crackdown on"........backslang word for boy

"Jack Straw"......Slang for draw, as in draw of cannabis

The following headline in the Daily Mail:

"Gorbals Bleated-What A Gallumphing Numptie!"  Gorgbals is refering to Gorbals Mick, the ex speaker of the Houses of Parliament who came from the Gorbals area of Glasgow. Numptie means idiot.

Pat Paulson (from memory):

"US politics uses abbreviations.  For example, we have GOP, which stands for Group of Old People, and Dems, which stands for 'Demolition'."

Aneirin,

The term "tea-bagging" meant something else until just recently. So pay attention to the people using the term and the context of the conversation. Urban Dictionary is a good site for US slang.

2. tea bagging
The act of lowering one's balls onto someones face, or into their mouth while they are laying down. Kind of resembles dipping a tea bag into a hot cup of water.

GOP - Grand Old Party, aka the Republican Party (and said like letters gee-oh-pee not like "gop")

Teabagger - slur referring to the Tea Party movement, a conservative/libertarian movement against big government.

Republican - the more conservative of our major 2 parties. Comparable to the Tory/Conservative Party.

Democrat - the more liberal of our major 2 parties. Comparable to the Labour Party.

Winger - Left Wing is liberal/Democrat, and Right Wing is conservative/Republican. Derived from the three estate government of Revolution era France where the third estate sat in the "left wing" of the hall.

.....mostly correct, but wrong on the UK equivilant of Democrat. That'd be the Liberal Democrats, not the Labour party. There's no equivilant of the Labour party in US mainstream politics. What gets called left and right wing in the US would be called centrist and right wing everywhere else.

Thats because the United States is a center-right country.

No, thats because there is no such thing as a hard left in American politics. What so many of you bleat on about as "left" is far from the real deal. Many of you have compared Obama with communism and he is not even close.

.....i'd agree that your analysis is and has been correct for many years. Now, it might be something of a hijack, in which case i apologise, but most countries can (over decades) shift their political perspective. Different social innovations, new technology, even a charismatic leader can change the way a country views itself. What factors, in your view, anchor the US in that centre right position? And given that you've rightly identified your country as centre right, why do you keep insisting that Obama is socialist?

Of course there's a hard left here, don't be ridiculous. Every conceivable part of the political spectrum has its followers here! But the majority of Americans lean right, and those who lean left are fringe elements. The hard left, as represented by Pelosi, Reid, and Obama, are on the far fringes.

Which is precisely why they are plummeting in all the major polls the way they are, they're shedding their moderate masks and governing more towards the hard left than people expected they would.
