You know whats really  fun? Ever quit the caffeine for about a month, then do a big Mountain Dew in about ten minutes?

Bzz bzz bzz bzz bzz!

My tolerance is really high right now too...

Hi gorgeous! Yep me too, but as long as you get sugarfree, I think it's fine. I drink about 4 a day. Yes I am a caffeine addict. What can you do? [8D]. I don't ever get jittery or weird from it but maybe because I don't ever try to not drink it.  Even with all of that, I still make usually a daily walk from my office to the coffee shop for a magnum latte, which has 4 shots of espresso. No wonder I don't sleep. ;)

sblady -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/27/2010 6:41:20 PM)

Energy drinks can be scary for a couple reasons. The boost of energy can come from the caffeine or Vitamin B. However, that's a massive amount of Vit B and although your kidneys will flush out the excess, that's a lot of work on organs that you need to last for a good while.

I've only tried one energy drink and don't intend to try any more. I need to keep my already impaired internal organs in tip top condition. Some of the ingredients (sugar substitute) can also wreak havoc on your nervous system.

Now, as far as coffee? If someone attempted to wrestle that cup out of my hands, it will turn ugly. [:D]

Tantriqu -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/27/2010 7:04:36 PM)

It's a big con, and they and their jerkwater ad campaigns have addicted you. Try tapering off slowly but completely and substituting a homemade protein shake: no crash and no withdrawal headache, plus more energy.
More and more people are having to go to rehab for caffeine addiction: the most famous recently is Dave Grohl.
If you have two or three per day, that's almost two thousand bucks per year you're literally pissing down the toilet, but good luck sticking it to The Man that's draining you of two grand for something that cost them pennies.

Folks -

Please be aware that consumption of energy drinks have been linked to
deaths.

"Health concerns over the Red Bull energy drink were fuelled yesterday after Europe's highest court upheld a French ban on the product.

The fizzy drink has been linked to several deaths and some experts have criticised its high levels of caffeine and other stimulants."

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/5753.php

"For some athletes, an energy drink laced with stimulants from various sources can cause problems because it is almost impossible to know how much stimulant actually is in each drink, Mr. Ellis said. Drinking too much can produce a false sense of well-being.

"They help blunt your perception of pain," he said. "That might be good in the short term, but the bad news is if you don't feel the fatigue in a hot, humid environment, your body won't make you slow down to minimize overheating. Exertional heatstroke is a real possibility.""

I don't get a crash from one little Red Bull. Just a nice energy and brain boost that lasts a day or two.

I wonder if my metabolism different is why.

I have medically controlled ADHD, so now caffeine effects me almost as it would a normal person.

If i were not medically controlled, caffeine would have little to no effect at all.

I am not saying you are ADD/ADHD...just that there are certain factors that make the metabolism different

Red bull is illegal in France, Denmark and Norway, and there was an Irish case of sudden adult death syndrome where a guy had been necking red bull a while ago-I don't remember the details, and I don't know if the link was ever proven.

Make of those facts what you will.

what a dumbass. He should have never necked with a bull that wasn't dehorned.

Betcha he got one HELL of a hickie....

myotherself -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/28/2010 7:05:16 AM)

~fr~

since breaking my wrist 3 weeks ago and being home all day, I've been consuming a hell of a lot of coffee and diet pepsi. After a week or two, I found my stomach was constantly upset (not going into to details...I like you lot too much!). So I decided to give up on the fizzy drinks and the coffee, and stick to jasmine tea and water.

That was 4 days ago. I've been through horrible withdrawal...headaches, further stomach upset, mood swings, insomnia. Now that it's pretty much out of my system, I feel good. More alert, more settled emotionally, and this damn headache has pretty much gone.

I think I'll give the caffeine-based energy drinks a miss! [:D]

Is it really fair to place the blame on the caffeine content in energy drinks, when each of us have a different degree of tolerance to caffeine?

I would be inclined to look at the potassium content, which has a direct effect on the muscles...one of which is the heart.

The info, that red Bull is illegal in Denmark, is false as it is widely avaliable here. I never tasted it my self, but i know of lots of youngsters specially who swears to the stuff. It is on the shelf in supermarkets like COOP, Føtex and Netto. They would never have illegal stuff for sale.

perfectflaw00 -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/28/2010 8:50:13 AM)

Just like anything else you eat or drink, it varies from person to person. Personally caffeine has little to no effect on me I can get a quad shot venti at starbucks which has twice the caffeine of a red bull and I barely notice it.

Sanity -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/28/2010 9:17:29 AM)

Wow - talk about nanny states and a lack of freedom.

Sex and exercise are known to cause a rise in heart rates and blood pressure, and have caused many deaths because of that. So will the nanny states also move to ban sex and exercise?

I think alcohol is a hell of a lot more dangerous that caffeine and ginseng, etc. They get me going, like a lot of other really good things... [8D]

Too bad its a crime in certain places.

It tastes nasty, doesn't it? But I think its pretty much harmless, unless you're teetering on the brink of death from a heart condition anyway. But then anything stimulating could kill a person who is in that condition.

Ok, sorry my bad-I must be confused about which countries  they are-I remembered it being three, and the first net resource I checked seemed to almost fit with the memory so I didn't check any further.

I don't drink alcohol any more, I don't abuse narcotics, stopped when I was about 30.

I even quit smoking a few years back.

But I gamble some, and do I like the regular Red Bull energy drink.

A lot.

Rock Star is pretty good too, the double strength kind... I really, really like them.

I drink a lot of coffee too.

I know whats in the coffee, caffeine, of course. But what are all these other ingredients good for- Taurine, Milk Thistle, Guarana, Ginsing, B Vitamins. There are a few others as well.

Some of the energy drinks give me the jitters, you know, just a so-so caffeine buzz thats no better than Mtn Dew of coffee. But some of them make me feel really good for a day or two. More alert, more focused, even a little happier and a lot more productive. Too much is too much though... (sigh).

There's a lot of sugar in them too, and some have corn syrup, or other sweetners which some people maintain are bad for you.

Any favorites? Or opinions of which are best, or worst? Do you think they're all bad for you? Red Bull is expensive, but its my pick for #1 because its has very noticeable effects that I think are great, and they last for days.

.

I don't drink energy drinks but I am hopelessly addicted to caffeine.  I start with coffee in the morning, then switch over to diet coke in the afternoon.  I can (and have from time to time) even drink a cup of coffee before I go to bed with no problems sleeping.  Caffeine is just a part of me, I guess lol.

I don't know what taurine is.  Milk Thistle, Guarana, and Ginseng are herbs, and I don't much get into herbs, either, but do know certain medicines are made from herbs.  Seems somewhere in my reading I've read that Milk Thistle has desirable benefits (but I don't know what lol), Guarana can increase your heart rate and blood pressure.  But vitamins (and I'm a vitamin taking fool) are good for you.  Vitamin B specifically is good for energy and for your heart as well, among other benefits.

Seems I read (or may have saw on tv) once that an energy drink called "5 hour [something or other, I can't remember the end of it" was one with a lesser amount of undesirable effects.  But again, I don't take them, so I don't much read up on them.

You must drink red bull -- while watching Fox News -- so then you can post here.

Energy drinks remain a curiosity to me, but I don't want to add any new addictions to my life. Right now, Toberlone is bad enough.

Sanity -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/28/2010 11:09:46 AM)

Thats okay. The majority of cable viewers watch FOX News, so I'm in good company. Its you fringe far left types who appear to be dropping acid and guzzling Jack Daniels while watching Obermann and Maddow...  so you can post here.  [:D]
