popeye1250 -> Turn all your lights on tonight! (3/26/2010 11:24:03 PM)

Starting at 8:30 tommorow night for an hour everyone's going to turn on all their lights to celebrate "Earth Day" or whatever they call it.
I'll have the front porchlight burning bright and the two spotlights out back.
It'll be cool to see the satelite photos!

That's a good idea, call for the world to turn their lights on at 2030, that way we can celebrate earth day, by eating into it's very resources and increasing the pollutants that we are told are damaging our planet.

A better call, would be for everyone to turn their lights off and give the planet a break

This is to commemorate "Earth Hour" and it is suggested that we turn all our lights off.

thanks for correcting that angelika.

Uh no Pops, the idea is to turn our lights off.

MichiganHeadmast -> RE: Turn all your lights on tonight! (3/27/2010 6:41:06 AM)

No, Popeye! The idea is to turn your lights OFF (so we can look more like that nighttime map of utopian North Korea) and then light candles, causing a net INCREASE in pollutants, but somehow make ourselves all smuggly, er, snuggly and comfortable.

Participants spend an enjoyable sixty minutes in the dark, safe in the knowledge that the life-saving benefits of industrial civilization are just a light switch away. This bears no relation whatsoever to what life would actually be like under the sort of draconian carbon-reduction policies that climate activists are demanding: punishing carbon taxes, severe emissions caps, outright bans on the construction of power plants.

Forget one measly hour with just the lights off. How about Earth Month, without any form of fossil fuel energy? Try spending a month shivering in the dark without heating, electricity, refrigeration; without power plants or generators; without any of the labor-saving, time-saving, and therefore life-saving products that industrial energy makes possible.

At least until my kitten knocks a candle over, setting the apartment on fire and leaving us all homeless [:D]

sappatoti -> RE: Turn all your lights on tonight! (3/27/2010 6:52:34 AM)

During last year's Earth Hour, the neighborhood had three houses vandalized, two of which were attempted break-ins into foreclosed homes. Those homes are still empty and needing repairs from those attempts (yet the banks, or whoever, that own them haven't stepped up to take care of them). With three times as many homes now empty because of foreclosure around here, there is no way anyone in the neighborhood is turning off lights. It's safe to say that, instead, additional floodlights will be burning bright this year.

The idea behind Earth Hour has a nice, warm fuzzy feeling to it all but it's too much of a safety risk and not worth that fuzzy feeling in many places.

Sorry folks, but as long as thieves, vandals, and hooligans exist and don't give too hoots about the planet, Earth Hour moments just don't happen around here.

Yeah, I get paranoid about candles. Either the kitty knocking one over, or the dog bumping into the table and knocking it over while chasing the kitty (or vice versa).

I think with that sniper kitty of yours, I'd be worried about more than just knocking over candles! ;-)

Happy earth day everyone.

I didn't realisen until this post that cavemen had mastered electricity.

SFR

More token gestures to highlight something we are all aware of. It's not greater awareness we need but real political movement from the worlds two biggest polluters.

pahunkboy -> RE: Turn all your lights on tonight! (3/27/2010 10:07:13 AM)

OOOO  Popeye!   I love you!

Yes- count me in.   I, myself and me- pay MY electric bill.

I am IN!

pahunkboy -> RE: Turn all your lights on tonight! (3/27/2010 10:08:36 AM)

I might even let my car lights on too- while the car idles.

Thanks for the heads up. I have some extra spots and flood lights that need to be installed, perhaps today would be a great chance to try them out. Count me in, I will turn all of mine on, for this important cause.

Doing my part to help drown polar bears.

servantforuse -> RE: Turn all your lights on tonight! (3/27/2010 11:32:55 AM)

I'd like to help but my floods are on every night anyways.
