I don't start threads very often but just wanted to see how others are viewing Dec. 21st, 2012?

I know 'many' will say it's just a date, or whatever is going to happen is gonna happen so why worry and I get that. I don't sit around day after day worrying if there will be a Dec. 22nd 2012. I'm not building an underground bunker, and I'm not stocking up on food (well to some extent I am- I always try to have a small stockpile for emergencies- power out for days, flooding etc)

Anyhoo, back to my question. (I'm long winded). For a while now I have been of the mind that the Myan long count calendar was simply saying a new beginning was coming (Trying to stay postive instead of negative). Today I learned of the 'I CHING' and I must say it does have me wondering what 'really' is going to happen on that day.

Between the lining up that only happens every 25,800 years and so many different ancient cultures showing this particular date as...as what? end of days? a new beginning? nothing? a shift of the poles?

Anybody care to share their thoughts?

Status: offline 		from a purely academic perspective I would venture to postulate it means a pole shift or some other major earth changing event.. not necessarily "the end of the world"


From a purely emotional perspective I hope it means the aliens are coming... then we can have the alien sex fetish too!

That's exactly what my thought was too, until I learned of the 'I CHING'  along with a few other ancient cultures. (obviously I watched the History channel longer than I should have today) lol

I don't think it is the end of the world, but I do think that all of these things from thousands of years ago are not mere coincidence. The notion of the poles shifting, even if not a dramatic shift, can certainly cause alot of destruction.

Thank you to all who posted so far. I am very interested in what others have to think.

Many ancient cultures used the alignment of the stars, sun, and planets to create the earliest calendars. So it's only natural that at moments of large alignments, (such as what will happen in 2012) that many ancient calendars will also coincide.

And for many of the ancient calendars, there's no cataclysm associated with 12/21/2012 - rather the calendar simply starts over on the next day (i.e. the Mayan), which also makes total sense to me.

Add to that the fact that many ancient cultures actually see a new age, a new dawn of enlightenment for human beings happening in 2012 - not the end of the world - and i am at peace with whatever may happen.

The whole notion that "ancient cultures saw the end of the world coming" is simply a modern invention, based upon fear, freedom of information, and the interpretation of such by those that like to get people all worked up and scared about things. i think most of the folks selling 2012 end of the world theories are also the ones selling books, disaster kits, and tin foil hats.

i do believe in being prepared in general - there are many disasters that can happen without 2012. i have food, water, medicines, and seeds in supply just in case of a tornado, hurricane (ask the folks in Houston in the post-Ike aftermath how long it took them to get electricity), or any other disaster.

Security is - for the most part - a superstition, and an illusion. We all could get hit by the bus at any time. i drive one of those Toyotas that may kill me tomorrow. So who knows when the Universe will decide to punch my ticket - but until then, i'm happy.

i say let's all focus on more important things, like helping each other as human beings on this planet that we share, and solve some much more pressing issues then deciphering 2012.

I hope you are also armed.. Because protecting such valuable commodities as food and water will be a higher priority than having them.

If I am home with Mom and something serious happens, I got the rifles for protection.

I am betting that it will be like the Y2K episode...big panic, but it fizzled to being a firecracker.

Several such dates have come and gone, and they just set new ones.

After 2012, the new ones will start the new countdowns.

What will I do? Make coffee. It's what I do.
