From The Economist Online:

quote:

IT TOOK more than a decade for Ford to create what it called its Premier Auto Group around a bunch of classy European brands—starting in 1987 with its purchase of Aston Martin, followed by the acquisitions of Jaguar, Volvo and then Land Rover. It all proved a terribly expensive distraction. Now, it has taken Ford three years of tricky negotiations to dismantle the group, selling the European marques at a considerable loss. Aston Martin went to a British-led consortium in 2007, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) was snapped up by Tata of India in 2008 and, on March 28th, a deal was signed to sell Volvo to Geely, a small but vastly ambitious Chinese carmaker.

I grew up in Volvos, learned to drive on a Volvo, back when they were Swedish cars! The sale to Ford was strategic for the carmaker but now, wow, why does it feel like a liquidation sale?

I'm telling you, very soon you'll crack open a fortune cookie and it's going to say: "Time to pay up!"

L.A., and I'm sure we'll be able to expect the same high quality from the Chinese Volvo as we do all other Chinese products!

What, like Cross pens? Those are pretty good. Come to that, a few of the Jinhaos and Huashilais are very nice pens as well.

-fast reply-

I wonder if a guy could get a little Hummer in his Volvo now?

I normal economy a country would sell old technology when it has been replaced by a better one. Today Western countries are  surrendering their strength for short-term corporate profits.

Actually, the Chinese make very high quality products in addition to their low quality products. They figured out that they could cater to the people who wanted quality and the ones who wanted a bargain.

But do not be fooled, they are capable of extremely sophisticated engineering.

That seems to be the case. That is why I said in my OP that it feels like there is a liquidation sale in the US.

How many light bulbs does the average Volvo driver go through? Too many and just because they don't know how to invent an off switch.

Women aren't allowed to drive Volvos, take note of the man symbol on the front.

We had two matching white ancient Volvo wagons when I was a middle-schooler. I wish I had them back now, but at the time it was sooooo embarrassing.

I guess you missed in my OP that I learned how to drive with a Volvo ;-)

See when I see something with a man symbol on it, I tend to want to drive it. ;-)

Was it one of those original Volvo's that had square wheels to match the body style?

This is much like Fords sale of the Jaguar, Daimler and Land Rover brands.

Yep true asset stripping.

What people don't seem to realise is that when a company becomes a brand under a larger corporate body they cease to have a vision for the future or a strategy as to what the brand should stand for. No tradition or heritage just a name.

It was a Volvo GT just like this one:

ETA - the one I learned to drive on was black with orange and silver racing stripes and had a sunroof!

Oh gosh! They look like little clown cars! No.

But I did refuse to go on a second date with a guy because he drove a Smart. Nothing is more emasculating then driving a smart ;-)

I have a bad experience with Golf drivers they always seem to be cutting me up as I pootle along minding my own business. My worst experience of one was this road rage incident where he was tailgating me so I purposely went really slow. Then when I finally let him past he swerved into me, it was a bit like ones of those car chases in James Bond but without the cliff face and at 15mph.
