Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.

Read more here. From the article, it sounds like there is no limit to Michael Steele's incompetence as RNC chair in terms of responsible stewardship of funds. But I'm also, of course, struck by the fact that the RNC chair would go to such a club knowing that it will show up on an FEC filing someday. I'm not an RNC donor. (Nor have I ever donated to the DNC). If I were a donor, I'd want to know, from a purely financial perspective, if such expenditures were actually translating into high dollar donations. If I were an RNC donor, I'm not sure how I'd feel about this being done at a "bondage-themed nightclub." I'm guessing that most RNC donors are the fancier types for whom the idea of conducting business around strippers seems natural. If Focus on Family was raising money like this, some people might get upset. But that, contrary to the easy assumption about the party of "values," the nudie lady nightclub probably isn't a big deal to the RNC's consituents. What's anyone else's take on this?

well, hes fiscally conservative as is the rest of his party, no way could I go into a lesbian sex place and walk out for less than $5K

Sure you would, but since you're not a donor, you're just trying to stir up shit because your guy is crashing & burning big time.

Musicmystery -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 10:05:47 AM)

And you're OK with fraud?

mnottertail -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 10:09:21 AM)

well, of course they are, thats a political stock in trade. Does WMD or Iraq ring a bell?

Musicmystery -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 10:12:26 AM)

When Spitzer was banging expensive hookers, I just shook my head and thought, "You stupid moron."

But he was paying for it himself. If he'd have been using pubic money or my contributions, I'd have screamed for blood.

pahunkboy -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 10:19:47 AM)

yay to fun sex

Thadius -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 10:23:26 AM)

I guess the question that comes up for me is. Was he entertaining donors at this club, or was it a personal rest and relaxation type thing? The answer to that question is what my opinion of this rests on. If it was a personal trip to the club, then obviously something is wrong with the use of those funds.

Not hardly. I can see some segment of the population freaking out with a "OMG! PORN!" attitude and condemning it all together. Personally, I'm pretty pleased with Steele's stewardship of RNC funds because I want the RNC to crash and burn. I went with the hypothetical because I'm trying to imagine how people who don't want the RNC to crash and burn would respond to this story. Does the sex angle bother them? The money angle? None of it?

And I realize it's probably useless to convey this to you, but Obama isn't "my guy." I don't approach a forum such as this one thinking "what can I do today to support my guy?!" And if I did, I'd be coming up with stronger things than the Steele story. Politics interest me. I'm pretty cynical about most/all people with power and I don't think they need me to defend them on the internet. I just like discussing political stories.  This is a pretty trivial one. But on a board like this, you can usually find people interested in discussing more obscure events and policies.

I don't see the RNC doing anything.  They will just let it run the news cycle and let it die.  Not that they agree or disagree with it, but they know he is up for re-election as chair in January and then they can just vote him out.  Why give the guy the spotlight when his time is almost over anyway

~ Fast Affirmative Action ~

I think the accusations pertaining to Michael Steele are racially motivated.

housesub4you -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 11:38:23 AM)

Fellow -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 1:04:22 PM)

What's wrong with a bondage club? I would praise them for helping out.

servantforuse -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 1:39:53 PM)

Unlike the democrats, republicans welcome those from all walks of life.

popeye1250 -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 1:53:56 PM)

Now who'd you rather "party" with, the Republicans with whips and chains or the Democrats sitting around in a circle in the parlor drinking tea and bemoaning the atrocities in "Darfur" with a bunch of perpetual spinsters?
At least the Repubs are spending money helping the economy to get going while the Dems try to squeeze every last bit of toothpaste out of the tube.

LadyEllen -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 1:54:53 PM)

Nice spin guys....lets try this, lets pretend for a moment these were DNC funds...and lets try to imagine the hypocrisy that would follow.
Yeah,I'm splitting my side as I type while I imagine the post coming from Servants keyboard(picked you at random Servant...it could just  as easily been Sanity,or that paragon of independance...Popeye....lol)

mnottertail -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 2:36:54 PM)

LaTigresse -> RE: RNC money spent at bondage-themed nightclub (3/29/2010 2:50:03 PM)
