I can see a few arguments, especially easing up on judicial obligations. At the same time, though, a lot of the pro arguments are pretty facile, including the fantasy that people involved in criminal activity will simply turn around and pay taxes.

I think casual pot smokers probably will. I think people would much rather go to 7-11 to buy a legal joint than track down some shady dealer. You can buy cheap stolen cigarettes from some sketchy guy in an alley too, but most people don't.

The biggest social benefit here would be yanking the financial rug out from under the gangs.  Move that money into the tax-paying economy, and steal the bullets right out of their guns.

I read in the paper a while back that medial marijuana, and how easy it is to get in some places, is already hurting the Mexican cartels. I'd love to see those guys wiped out, it's really fucking up Mexico and bringing a lot of crime into the US as well.

Unfortunately, I think if it does go through we will promptly see the Feds assert their primacy, and while use and possession might be officially tolerated, distribution will remain in the underground economy.  The stoners are happy, but it does the rest of us no real good at all.

Yeah, you're probably right on that one.... but hopefully if people can legally grow it themselves it'll at least hurt the gangs/cartels and save the criminal justice system some money.

I really don't care one way or the other but states rights are being ignored on a regular basis by the Feds. Maybe if they tax weed, they will stop raising taxes on liquor and cigars.

The Governator has been talking about legalizing and taxing marijuana for a few years now.

Schwarzenegger open to studying marijuana tax idea
May 5, 2009 | 2:06 pm

"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says California should study other nations’ experiences in legalizing and taxing marijuana, although he is not supporting the idea.

He says it’s time to debate proposals such as a bill introduced in the Legislature earlier this year that would treat marijuana like alcohol. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a San Francisco Democrat, says taxing marijuana at $50 per ounce would bring more than $1 billion a year to the state.

Schwarzenegger said during a Tuesday news conference that “it’s time for debate” on the idea. But he warned against making harmful decisions just for the sake of raising money.

He said some other nations have had negative experiences. Ammiano’s bill is on hold in the Legislature. He delayed seeking approval until next year."

Damn hippies....

Oh wait that's a different topic. I am actually hoping that it passes, and then spreads like wildfire across the other states. This prohibition has cost everyday folks too much already, and hasn't accomplished a thing except fill some cells and get some fine money.

For the record I am allergic to it, but haven't seen anything that leads me to believe it is any worse than liquor, and actually think the effects are much more acceptable to society than drinking.

What is also significant about the whole change in laws, is the removal of pot from the black market. The laws made it a gateway drug to harder stuff not the drug itself.

Now that the smoker can grow his own. That's over.

Good! Let The People decide!
I hope it passes!

I hope it passes too.

Then let the law suits fly for wrongful imprisonment since it was bullshit rules to begin with by some bureaucratic oligarchs trying to protect the cia's and mi6's fucking business interests.

Then the next thing should be prescriptions.  I have to go to a fucking doctor and TELL him (the middleman), what meds I want instead of just walking into a pharmacy and getting them over the counter like them damn freedom hating muslims can do across the pond.

We are so ridiculed for our ignorance over there.

thishereboi -> RE: Legalizing Marijuana to Be Put to a Vote in California (4/1/2010 5:21:21 AM)

Yea, I hope it passes also.

So, Brain, is pot legal in Canada and if not what are you doing to get them to change the law there?
