There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism... The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities."
Theodore Roosevelt - 26th President of the United States (1858-1919)

In the present, there are African-Americans, Native-Americans etc. People, it seems, no longer identify themselves as simply, Americans.

We wouldn't squabble if we were allowed separatism like SOME people.

Look at Canada, Quebec is like having a foreign country in their country.

I don’t understand why. Isn’t it the coming together of so many heritages that makes this such a great place? Does mentioning where our pasts lie cancel out where we are now?

When did these groups not identify in this way?

...or Wales and Scotland in the UK, different language, culture, food, road signs and, yes, probably hookers.

And you know what? It aint a problem. The only people who have a problem with it are the people that can't cope with people being different.

Separatism is indeed a bit radiacal.  All we really need is for people to respect each other.

He'd say the same thing.

His was a country of Germans and Irishmen and Italians etc.

Not to mention he became President when an anarchist shot McKinley.

Agreed, that entire album was pretty damn good. I especially like the "An American Boy Grows Up" monologue.

Phil, but in Quebec they think they're a "seperate" country. Haven't they tried to suceed from Canada a few times?

...as has Scotland, as has Wales. Doesn't matter. The fact is, all those votes failed, the majority are happier to be part of the larger country than the smaller one. There's always a separatist minority, but they don't define the greater whole.

However, in the context of this thread, there's no problem with having a separatist tendency in a country. Keeps the rest of us on our toes. No country is a monoculture. Indeed, the very best and most succesful countries embrace polyculturalism. If that means that one of the miriad cultures is a bit mouthy, then so be it. It's the price you pay for being as strong as a mongrel and not as fragile as a pure-breed.

Mike, I didn't think anyone was being treated "bad" in this country anymore?

I have had a number of discussions about this very issue. The hyphenated identity does not bother me in the least. It does seem to be a very touchy subject for some other people though. Apart from the Indigenous People that were already here, most of us are the descendants of immigrants. So what is wrong with remembering where we came from?

I hear that Nevada has a nice selection of nice hookers at the various cathouses. That is of course just from word of mouth.
