Although gold is about to take a bath and if you're brave and in it for the long haul you could make substantial profit by buying metal when prices hit bottom. But you'd be looking at holding teh gold for several years minimum which would eat into any profit, due to cost of the safety deposit box or other secure storage for the gold.

Ken...are you saying you would sell it now, before the price drops?

I try not to give specific advice like that. I don't want people to be mad at me.

It is my opinion that gold is significantly over valued. It is my opinion that it is due for a correction. I do not at present have any precious metals as part of my investments for those reasons.

However jewelry is a complicated matter. If you're selling you will want to get the pieces appraised by at least 2 different jewelers. That should at least keep you from getting ripped off. And even then you're not going to recoup what you paid for the pieces if you bought them retail since purchase price is based on craftsmanship and most pieces are bought for the value of the metal alone.

LaTigresse -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/1/2010 12:53:10 PM)

And yes........you will pay for the appraisal. I have paid as much as $200.00 to have a piece appraised.

It is not going to collapse.

You haven't seen anything yet bubble wise.

So we agree to disagree.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/1/2010 3:34:49 PM)

i found a bunch of old gold, broken bracelets, earrings, stuff i never wear, when i moved recently.

tuesday i took it by a local family jewelry store that has been around here foever, and i walked out with $346.

it was definately better than a poke in the eye!

:o)

kiwisub12 -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/1/2010 5:25:35 PM)

I sold a bunch of gold jewelery given to me by the ex. I seldom wore it then and never wear it now - so i took it to a local merchant, who gave me what i thought was a fair price - basically it was the price of gold minus a certain percentage. I took out some of the larger sapphires, and the diamond - actually they took them out for me.

I wouldn't send to the people on tv who offer to send you an envelope. My thinking was that if I sold in state, I could at least have the AG to back up if i needed to. Also, if they have a long standing business, they would be less inclined to poop in their own back yard. As it was, i thought i was treated fairly, and the money i got went to a worthy cause - ME!!!!!!

Aneirin -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/1/2010 7:28:28 PM)

I won't sell the stuff when I get hold of it, I melt it and inlay it into other metals, currently iron, in fact when I get the process right, I am going to melt my wedding ring into a new iron ring for me.

DarkSteven -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/1/2010 8:02:58 PM)

Okay, holly.  Hunky believes that gold and precious metals will appreciate.  Since you don't need the money, he advises you to hold off on selling.

Ron's sure that it will drop.  So he's telling you to dump it.

I dunno either way.

If you do sell, do not go to a chain or especially to an Internet-advertising or TV-advertising place.  They are typically out to gather in unsophisticated people and fleece them.

I didn't quite say dump it. Hold it if she doesn't need or want the money, if she is sick of hauling it around to lay around and dust it, sell it.

I believe gold will drop precipitously in the coming year, but there are folks that at the outset of this scare said gold was going to $3K.

I also said hogs get slaughtered and lambs do too. If gold is at 300 an ounce it is still worth more than something laying around unused, if it is at 3000 an ounce worth more than something laying around unused.

I live in the world I find myself in, and do not care which way gold goes, if I make money at it today, I do it, hell, there is always another go.

So, what I actually did Steve, was a full out waffle. Said it was up to her.

Sorta like: it is waaaaaaaaay too early to take a wait and see attitude about this thing.

....nothing goes up in a straight line.

so the minute it drops- or by any random measure-  some will say I was wrong.

there is alot of arrogance that the US- can do no wrong.   yet- historically- all fiat currencies fail.   The dollar is a petro dollar- backed by bombs and now drugs.  (Afghanistan)

No doubt politics has some to do with it.

I may have to sell some in the coming months. I am glad I have something to work with.

But really- any extreme move on PMs is to be viewed with caution.   If you use shadow stats inflation numbers- Gold should be $6700 an ounce.

I dont doubt that the powers that be have tricks up the sleeve.

But I do think that is coming to the end.  The big boys simply will not want to part with their gold.  A good example of this is how the exchanges now say they can settle in cash.  Well- hmmm-  just what someone wont want in a full currency collapse.

mnottertail -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/2/2010 6:48:16 AM)

which of all the fiat currencies have failed?

franc
pound
canadian
kroner
ruble
lira
peso

just to name a few, been around in one form or another longer than we've been alive even if all laid end to end.

And hunkie, heres the deal, you are getting most of your bullion out of the gold and silver merchants stocks (somewhere along the line) they create a buying need, sell it to you at spot, ($20 or like your guy on the board did below spot where he could get out of it with profit when he found out that he couldnt sell it anywhere near spot...you gotta have like 5k troy to sell at spot) and then buy it back when the pull the rug from ya, to be restocked --- and if some can afford to hold it forever, they dont give a fuck, not many will be able to.

I have not had to sell any yet.

Re-read my post.   The dollar is a PETRO dollar - backed by bombs and now drugs.

mnottertail -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/2/2010 6:57:32 AM)

Well, folks buy and sell bombs and drugs in this old world, gotta be backed by something useful, here on this planet.

Wouldn't be spendable for bacon and eggs if it was backed by dogshit, I should think.

pahunkboy -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/2/2010 7:01:26 AM)

well - the goal was to switch to carbon backed dollar.

mnottertail -> RE: selling your gold jewelry (4/2/2010 7:25:14 AM)

dude, here is another place where you fall off the cart. WHO? said it was the goal to back it by carbon? right off the bat, this would by definition, make it reserve money and not fiat money.

If Alex Jones or some other fucking imbicile, dont bother telling me. If it wasnt the federal reserve; then it is prima facie moronic, whoever is tinfoiling that outta their head voices.
