There are three things people seem to notice about me right off the bat
1.) My hair
2.) My height
3.) My obsession with talking about politics.

For awhile now, I've had a strong interest in politics in my country and around the world. I find politics to be a fascinating (and often enraging) subject and I'm never shy about "talking turkey". Since I'm kind of new around here, I wanted to know where you guys stand politically and why.

I am a pretty orthodox libertarian (with a small "l")/strict constitutionalists and I have been for a couple years now. It's tough for me to trust people and I CERTAINLY don't trust the government. Though I believe it is a necessary evil, I don't believe any long term good can come of a strong central government. With that power, greed manifests, and that greed turns quickly into corruption. My ideal society would give the central government enough power to protect our essential, God given (or natural) rights of life, liberty, and proper.

Also, I don't believe the government has any right to tell people how to live their lives, so long as they don't harm anyone's previously stated rights. For example: my mind still reels at the fact that a bill was almost passed in my country, at the federal level, to ban gay marriage; something that has always been a state issue, and something that really isn't worth getting upset about, legally speaking. To me, this was not only Unconstitutional but the most blatant display of bigotry and homophobia seen on the federal level.

I could go on and on about this; but I'd like to hear from you guys as well.

Are you asking me what it is about my hair or height that people notice about me? Well, I have a big bush of red hair, which you don't see too terribly often and I'm also pretty tall (6'5"-6'6"). People never fail to point those two qualities out, for better and for worse.

I am basically a socialist, I believe the government has a duty to promote the welfare of all citizens, particularly the disadvantaged and poor. I do agree with you on the gay marriage bit, but luckily for me I live in a country that allows it.

Typically English....and what I would call realistic....but then I would say that as I wouldn't call myself a proper idiot dreaming about the improbable.

Anyway.....

What does the experience of human nature tell you?

That we are more civilised today than we have ever been.

What is the political climate that allows for that?

We need an appeal.....most of us hate absolutism......but we need a ruler.....most of us will accept the laws of the land.

So we are happy to submit but only where our voices are heard.....meaning Communism/Fascism/Libertarianism are not for the long term but Liberalism and Conservatism are....which I suppose is borne out by the fact that Western societies are not ran by the fringes.

Me......there ain't much about me that isn't liberal....and I think libertarians are dreamers and have much more in common with communists than they do conservatives.

I'm pretty much a "populist" (For the People) but with a libertarian streak too.
I agree with you, I also think that "the govt" exists to *serve* The People not to *dictate* to us or try to tell us what to do. "Govt" should *always* be subservient to The People. The People are "the management" and govt. is "the hired help."
I also support gay rights and that includes gay marriage, legalizing marijuana, healthcare for all citizens, a woman's right to choose, but enforce our immigration laws.
I don't want my country or govt. being a "world leader" or any of that kind of nonsense, they're accountable to us not to anyone else. There's an old saying; "Mind your own beeswax!" We need to stop spending money that doesn't exist.
And "lobbyists" should be outlawed. They can sit down at their kitchen tables and write a letter to their reps just like I do!
The Democrats seem to want more govt. intrusion into their lives, for what reason I don't know.
The Republicans seem to want to give our money to big corps. in the form of "govt. contracts."
I don't like either of those two parties.

Well I'm not a guy, but I'll certainly chime in. ;-)

I'm a Canadian like Arpig. I also believe the government has a duty to promote the welfare of all citizens, particularly the disadvantaged and poor. I think social programmes are essential—though I find many of them are terribly run— but I wouldn't label myself as a socialist. I'm liberal in my ideologies and in my outlook in life. That said, I have a hard time identifying with any political party or ideology on the whole.

Down here in the States (and at least where I'm from, which is the Mid-Atlantic U.S.of A) "you guys" is a general term for people, both male and female.

As for the lot of you that hang to the left, I really wish I could agree with you. I think it would be great if there were a society where one great body could take care of all of our needs efficiently and ethically. I really wish I could go down that road with you.

But, and you can call me a cynic if you'd like, I don't trust any government body, especially on the national level, as far as I can throw 'em. I've seen what our federal government has already done with this nation with the power they have. To give them even more power is inconceivable to me.

Now, I will say that in a smaller nation...with a population less than...say..4-5 million, I can see how national socialism can work; but in a nation like U.S. where we have over 300 million (and growing) people, I just can't see how that can work.

Pretty simple around here, Wash. You can be a Liberal Democrat (capital L and D), or you are a racist, fascist, teabagger, wingnut. At least, that's how you'll get labeled.

I'm a conservative, but you'll pick up on who is who pretty quickly.

I am a rarity... I am a liberal democrat that owns firearms and is a survivalist. I have the opinion that the world is being run by the terminally stupid and sooner or later someone is going to screw the pooch and destroy civilization as we know it.

I also think that we have a 50/50 chance that it will be a democrat or a republican that does it. Sooner or later someone in power is going to have a breakdown and blow the planet up for our own good.

Rich,come on there are only a handful of guys that would qualify on all of those counts here at Collarme(racist,fascist,teabagger and wingnut)certainly not everybody save the Liberal Democrats .

Sorry to burst your bubble, but, there are plenty of non-partisans who are walking contradictions. Most people pick and chose from more than one party. The current gap in the US bipartisan system is pretty extreme and I'm sure it is creating more people who can't pick one party or the other.
